Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Ultrasound technology is advancing with more compact and portable probes, meeting the growing demand for low-cost, point-of-care devices. The shift toward 3D imaging and high-framerate schemes enhances diagnostic capabilities, but also challenges data processing and interpretation in real time. As a subset of artificial intelligence, deep learning has significantly impacted various aspects of ultrasound imaging, including image quality enhancement, 3D reconstruction and image analysis, resulting in higher diagnostic accuracy and efficiency.

This Special Issue of Applied Science aims to explore cutting-edge developments in leveraging deep learning techniques to enhance the capabilities and applications of ultrasound imaging. This Special Issue invites contributions that address the following key areas:

  • Ultrasound Image Analysis: Innovations in using deep learning to improve the interpretation and accuracy of ultrasound images.
  • Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS): Enhancements in real-time diagnostic capabilities at the bedside through advanced deep learning models.
  • Ultrasound Image Enhancement: Techniques to improve image quality using AI-driven methods.
  • 3D Ultrasound and 3D Reconstruction: Applications of deep learning in reconstruction and analyzing three-dimensional ultrasound images, providing more detailed and accurate visualizations.
  • Super-Resolution Ultrasound: AI methods to achieve higher resolution images, surpassing the traditional limits of ultrasound technology.
  • Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning: Broader AI applications in ultrasound, including novel algorithms, architectures and their clinical impacts.
  • AI-Powered Ultrasound: Integration of AI in ultrasound devices for enhanced diagnostic capabilities and workflow efficiencies.
  • Explainable AI: Ensuring transparency and interpretability of AI models in medical diagnostics to foster trust and adoption in clinical settings.
  • Tumor Detection and Segmentation: Advanced deep learning techniques for the accurate detection and segmentation of tumors in ultrasound images, improving early diagnosis and treatment planning.

This Special Issue aims to gather research that pushes the boundaries of what is possible with ultrasound imaging using recent AI advancements, offering improved diagnostic accuracy, efficiency and patient outcomes.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
