Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Current trends in Roman wall painting have moved beyond the application of anachronistic Renaissance fresco techniques to the ancient world and the decorative schemes coined in the nineteenth century. Moreover, the diverse areas of the ancient Roman world with unique characteristics contribute to a richer understanding of the importance of local preparatory techniques and materials concerning the finished product. This diversity presents an intriguing opportunity for discoveries. Finally, when references to artisans are absent from the ancient literary record, gaps exist regarding how these individuals may have engaged with their spatial environments. Thanks to the intersections between historical literary evidence and material culture, diverse regional, socio-economic, spatial, and environmental concerns, as well as the roles of artisans, become prevalent.

This Special Issue welcomes original research on Roman wall painting from a broad geographic (Mediterranean) and chronological range (Republic–late Empire). Papers, transdisciplinary in approach, will offer a critical understanding of the working conditions of artisans, highlighting the human element in creating these works. The Special Issue also encourages exploration of regional considerations for the preparation of the wall spaces (mortars, plasters, preparatory marks), the material culture of painting (tools, pigments, binders, stone, terracotta), and the relationship between spatial environments and technique (space type, upkeep, and repair in antiquity).
