Dear Colleagues,
The last two decades have shepherded increased awareness and intervention regarding the field of trauma-responsive practice. The current literature has effectively expanded our understanding of trauma-informed care, from having a sole focus on addressing the needs of patients and other individuals who are receiving care, to recognizing the needs of staff providing this care and the organizational climate and culture in which the services take place. There has been a greater recognition of the need to expand the definition of traumatic experiences to include social, psychological, moral, relational, and cultural violence, as well as physical violence. This Special Issue aims to further advance the literature on trauma-informed care beyond its current concentration on the impact of trauma and violence on mental health in individuals, aiming for a more expansive centering of social health. We conceptualize social health as the relational and developmental functioning of individuals, families, and communities within their social environments, including education, social and traditional media, employment, as well as a range of social service and health care sectors. This issue reflects the theoretical contributions of authors who are exploring the practical applications of trauma-responsive knowledge, skills, and interventions, as well as the impacts of these applications on humanity’s collective social health.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Behavioral Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
