Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Catalysis is crucial in the pharmaceutical industry, enabling various therapeutic compounds' efficient and sustainable production. Its significance lies in enhancing chemical processes' efficiency, selectivity, and environmental compatibility. Catalysts lower the activation energy required for reactions, allowing pharmaceutical compounds to be produced more quickly and cost-effectively under milder conditions. This efficiency is vital in pharmaceutical manufacturing, where speed and cost are critical. Catalysis also ensures high selectivity, forming the desired product over undesired by-products, essential for producing pure pharmaceuticals. This high selectivity reduces the need for extensive purification and minimizes waste, promoting more sustainable practices. Environmentally, catalysis allows reactions to proceed with better resource utilization, reducing the pharmaceutical industry's overall environmental footprint. Green catalysts, such as biocatalysts and recyclable heterogeneous catalysts, further enhance sustainability by reducing the need for hazardous reagents. Furthermore, catalysis is key in developing innovative pharmaceuticals, enabling the synthesis of complex molecules, including enantioselective catalysis for producing chiral drugs with specific biological activities.

This Special Issue aims to explore emerging trends in pharmaceutical catalysis, encompassing homogeneous and heterogeneous processes, as well as photo--, electro-, and enzymatic catalysis for generating bioactive compounds. We aspire for this Special Issue to be a valuable resource for researchers, engineers, and industry professionals in the field of catalysis, as well as for students and academics seeking a deeper understanding of this crucial area of science and technology. Both research and review articles are welcome.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Catalysts is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
