Functional Differences in Periostin Splicing Isoforms in Cancer and Inflammatory Disorders

Dear Colleagues,

It has been reported that the blood concentration of periostin increases in various inflammatory diseases depending on the malignancy of the disease and that blood periostin levels are high in various metastatic cancers and in chemotherapy-resistant states. In addition, periostin undergoes selective splicing, in which specific exons are deleted, and we have discerned that these variants have different functions. Although the effects of periostin on cancer have been demonstrated in periostin knock-out mice, contrasting results have also been published. As a result, the possibility of suppressing only specific periostin splicing variants is being investigated.

Moreover, periostin belongs to a group of proteins called matricellular proteins, which are known to affect the intracellular signals of various proteins by conjugating with them. As the function of periostin has not yet been fully analyzed, It is necessary to clarify its function in pathological conditions, including various inflammatory diseases, mainly cancer.
