Recent Advances of Apoptosis and Autophagy in Cardiovascular Diseases and Cancer

Apoptosis and autophagy are hallmarks of human disease affecting virtually all major tissue types. Cardiovascular diseases and cancer remain the top two most devastating human disorders in terms of mortality and morbidity, and they are driven by complex mechanisms that may involve similar molecular pathways. This Special Issue will focus on the mechanism of autophagy and apoptosis crosstalk in cardiovascular diseases, in cancer and cancer treatment, and at the intersection of cancer-treatment-induced cardiovascular dysfunction. All of those conditions share common signatures in autophagy dysregulation leading to apoptotic cell death, but the precise underlying molecular mechanisms leading to cell demise/survival and disease pathogenesis remains poorly characterized. There is thus a critical need for interdisciplinary studies from the scientific community to discover novel autophagy mechanisms—the link to precise cell death programs (i.e., apoptosis, necrosis, autosis, ferroptosis, etc.)—and new biomarkers that can lead to the further development of pharmacological strategies suitable for clinical translation. The aim of this Special Issue is to provide state-of-the-art understandings of autophagy and apoptosis at the molecular, cellular, tissue, and organismal levels that underlie cardiovascular disease, cancer, and cancer-treatment-induced cardiotoxicity with the potential to improve human health.
