Dear Colleagues,

The air transport mode is vital to the world’s economy as it allows the high-speed movement of people and goods both domestically and internationally. Air transport systems are highly complex by nature with very high unit costs when compared to other modes, in addition to being a major contributor to worldwide emissions. As such, they require constant improvement through systems optimization. Recent developments in automation; air navigation systems; aircraft design, operations, and maintenance; network planning; and airline operations have highlighted the need for further development of optimization tools. This Special Issue will present the state of the art in air transport systems optimization.

The growing demand for air transportation has led to an increase in worldwide air traffic inefficiency due to capacity constraints. The impacts associated with this situation can be reduced through operational changes. To better handle the problem, the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) and the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) program suggest Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) as a solution. The Area Navigation (RNAV) and Required Navigation Performance (RNP) approaches belong to the group of PBN procedures. These procedures allow for a more efficient use of airspace by reducing route distances, fuel consumption and perceived aircraft noise. This article quantifies the benefits of PBN systems for two indicator parameters—fuel burn and flight time—and compares PBN systems to conventional instrument navigation procedures. The case studies use five airports in Brazil. The results of this analysis show that the benefits of the PBN approach vary with aircraft type and individual route characteristics. Full article

High profitability and high costs have stiffened competition in the airline industry. The main purpose of the study is to propose a computationally efficient algorithm for integrated fleet assignments and aircraft routing problems for a real-case hub and spoke airline planning problem. The economic concerns of airline operations have led to the need for minimising costs and increasing the ability to meet rising demands. Since fleets are the most limited and valuable assets of airline carriers, the allocation of aircraft to scheduled flights directly affects profitability/market share. The airline fleet assignment problem (AFAP) addresses the assignment of aircraft, each with a different capacity, capability, availability, and requirement, to a given flight schedule. This study proposes a mathematical model and heuristic method for solving a real-life airline fleet assignment and aircraft routing problem. We generate a set of problem instances based on real data and conduct a computational experiment to assess the performance of the proposed algorithm. The numerical study and experimental results indicate that the heuristic algorithm provides optimal solutions for the integrated fleet assignment and aircraft routing problem. Furthermore, a computational study reveals that compared with the heuristic method, solving the mathematical model takes significantly longer to execute. Full article
