Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, the growing interest in the development of smart nanomaterials has driven significant advances in sustainable packaging and food preservation. These advancements are motivated by the need to mitigate the negative impacts of conventional plastic packaging and ensure greater food safety, while also reducing losses and waste. Innovative technologies, such as nanostructured films, nanofibers, and nanosensors, are at the forefront of these solutions, offering new opportunities to transform the packaging industry and preserve food quality.

We welcome both original research and review articles on topics including, but not limited to, the following:

Development of Nanostructured Films for Sustainable Packaging

  • Functional and mechanical properties
  • Applications in different types of food
  • Barriers against gases, moisture, and light

Smart Nanofibers for Food Quality Monitoring

  • Colorimetric sensors and freshness indicators
  • Detection of volatile amines and spoilage gases
  • Nanofibers based on biopolymers and natural sources

Nanosensors and Their Applications in Active and Intelligent Packaging

  • Real-time monitoring of storage conditions
  • pH, temperature, and oxygen indicators
  • Integration with tracking technologies and IoT

Technologies for Production and Scaling of Nanomaterials for Food Packaging

  • Large-scale manufacturing methods (such as Solution Blow Spinning and electrospinning)
  • Challenges in the production and commercialization of smart packaging
  • Regulation and safety of nanomaterials in contact with food

Impact of Nanomaterials on Food Quality and Safety

  • Effect of nanomaterials on extending product shelf life
  • Safety and toxicity assessment of nanomaterials in food
  • Analytical methods for monitoring the migration of nanomaterials

Future Trends and Perspectives in Food Packaging with Nanotechnology

  • Potential of new classes of nanomaterials (such as quantum dots and graphene)
  • Advances in 3D printing of nanomaterial-based packaging
  • Industrial partnerships and open innovation in food nanotechnology

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Foods is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
