Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, with artefacts and monuments constantly threatened with degradation, the preservation of cultural heritage has become an important issue worldwide. Therefore, it is very important to identify appropriate reinforcements capable of preserving and maintaining the natural aspects of these objects. Researchers in nanomaterial and nanotechnology fields of cultural heritage have shown increased interest in recent decades due to their unique properties and benefits. Many types of nanomaterials are well known, and the application of nanotechnologies or nanoscale characterization techniques has aided in the study of preservation and the enhancement of artifacts, works of art, objects, monuments and intangible attributes conveying artistic or historical value.

The objective of this Special Issue is to collect contributions concerning the latest research advances in the valorization and protection of cultural heritage. It is dedicated to the publication of original scientist, conservator, restorer and professional works involved in the conservation, restoration and enhancement of cultural heritage, highlighting the use of nanomaterials and nanotechnology in laboratory-scale applications, including in situ techniques, sustainable environmental solutions and case study contributions. In recent years, besides classic nanomaterials used in this field such as metal nanoparticles (copper and silver) and metal oxides (zinc and aluminum), novel nanomaterials such as hydroxyapatite and its derivatives have been explored as potential materials for cultural heritage consolidation, as well as photocatalytic TiO2 for surface protection through its self-cleaning properties combined with depolluting abilities with respect to the environment.

We invite all our colleagues to submit their original contributions to this Special Issue in the form of research and review articles as well as short communications to provide recent updates on all the above-mentioned issues.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Heritage is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
