Hydrology’s continued success during the past decade derives, in my opinion, from its open-minded and inclusive approach to water research. Few academic journals aspire to, or successfully implement, a solid, inter-disciplinary, and multi-disciplinary conceptualisation of hydrology. By proactively seeking out, and embracing, social, environmental, and global research into water, Hydrology provides a research platform for the holistic investigation of key sustainability challenges facing tomorrow’s water security, quality, viability, and availability. Academic research, and subsequent publications, have been—in my experience—rigorously peer-reviewed. Furthermore, through its open access options, Hydrology offers opportunities for researchers in the Global South and North to share ideas, formally, and to increase issue awareness beyond journals that focus on a more limited range of single discipline research and/or narrowly focused lists of topics. From my experience, as an author and peer-reviewer, I hope to see the expansion of high-quality social science research—from qualitative and qualitative researchers—appear in future editions of Hydrology. To achieve this requires mutual interest in, and enhanced communication between, natural and social scientists. Hydrology presents a fantastic opportunity to facilitate such growth by cultivating multi-/inter-disciplinary, and even trans-disciplinary, investigations of how tomorrow’s natural and human environments can improve and thrive in a more equitable, sustainable fashion.
