Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The release of the Report of the Secretary’s Task Force on Black and Minority Health in 1985 sparked studies that have grown into the robust fields of minority health and health disparities research. For nearly fourty years, scientists and scholars have documented that marginalized racial and ethnic groups have disproportionate risks for illness and disease. Recent global events further illuminated that salience of inequality for an array of outcomes, including infectious and chronic diseases. Leading health agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health, have responded with funding announcements for studies that consider, examine, and address structural factors, including racism. Results from these studies may provide insights into how institutional policies and practices operate to adversely impact the health and well-being of marginalized groups and communities.
We are organizing a Special Issue, “Advances in Minority Health and Health Disparities Research”, in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health to showcase current work focusing on structural drivers of health and health disparities. Manuscripts focused on social determinants, food and shelter security, racism, sexism, and intersectionality, as well as emerging areas (e.g., population health, social justice, environmental justice, resiliance, social connection, research training, and mentoring) that will shape the next generation of research designed to reduce health disparities and improve the overall health of marginalized racial and ethnic groups, are welcome. Manuscripts that focus on minority health and health disparities from perspectives outside of traditional health science will be seriously considered. Manuscripts using qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods to report findings from intervention, observational, or secondary data analysis studies are welcome. We will also consider perspectives and theoretical/conceptual manuscripts as well. Contributions to this Special Issue will highlight approaches that can improve the health of marginalized populations.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
