Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The cost of illness (COI) is defined as the value of resources consumed or forgone due to health problems. It includes health sector costs (direct medical costs), costs to other stakeholders involved in patients’ care (non-medical direct costs), the value of reduced or lost patient productivity (indirect costs), and the costs of pain and suffering (intangible costs). Research into the cost of illness (COI) provides information regarding the economic burden of a particular disease from the perspective of society, public payers, households, or individuals. The goal is not only to assess disease-related healthcare costs, but overall costs to society, both medical and non-medical. COI research can help people to understand the significance of health problems, estimate major cost components and cost structures, and thus provide valuable cost estimates for comprehensive economic assessments. An accurate understanding of the COI is critical to help us to formulate and prioritize healthcare policies and interventions and ultimately allocate healthcare resources based on budget constraints to improve policy efficiency.

This Special Issue focuses on recent advancements in COI research in European countries. We will accept manuscripts containing studies with different designs, including prospective studies, retrospective studies, and case reports. Below are some examples, but the authors are not limited to these topics:

  • The economic or human burden of chronic diseases;
  • The use of cost of illness studies in priority setting at the national and regional levels;
  • The use of cost of illess studies by manufacturers;
  • Systematic literature reviews of disease burden;
  • Methodological considerations in cost of illness studies.
