Dear Colleagues,
Depression, the most human common disease and one of the most common mental disorders, affects over 300 million people around the world, regardless of gender, age, race or religion, and its incidence is constantly increasing. The disease is also the leading cause of disability worldwide and a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease. Standard pharmacotherapy of depressive disorders does not provide satisfactory results—treatment effects usually appear after a few weeks, which increases the risk of exacerbation of the disease and suicide attempts. In addition, treatment is often associated with side effects, resulting in the discontinuation of therapy by the patient. Many patients also suffer from drug-resistant depression—available drugs, including the ones from new generation, are ineffective. Therefore, it is justified to search for new therapeutic strategies for this disease. In this Special Issue, we would like to invite experts in the field of pharmacotherapy of depression to present their discoveries regarding antidepressants, drugs, and drug therapies. Review articles and short communications on the latest developments in this field are also welcome.
