Genetic Diversity, Founder Effects, and Migration in Neurodegeneration: Molecular and Population Perspectives

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue explores the impact of genetic diversity, founder effects, and migration patterns on neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Spinocerebellar Ataxias. By integrating molecular, genetic, and population-level perspectives, we aim to uncover how historical and regional variation in genetic backgrounds contributes to disease susceptibility, expression, and progression. We welcome contributions that address mechanisms shaped by population bottlenecks, admixture, or isolation, as well as studies using advanced genomic and bioinformatic tools to identify population-specific molecular signatures. Case studies in founder populations and underrepresented groups are especially encouraged. This collection also aims at promoting the inclusion of diverse genetic contexts in global neurodegeneration research, with implications for precision medicine and equitable biomarker discovery.
