Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Allergy and asthma are important human diseases that impact the health of many globally. Understanding these diseases at the molecular level is of paramount importance in order to identify biomarkers that will pave new and exciting paths towards cutting edge diagnostics and therapeutics. For example, understanding the molecular basis of allergens that trigger allergies is of paramount significance in identifying allergenic determinants or epitopes. Modifying these at a molecular level can permit the recombinant expression of their hypoallergenic variants, which can then be safely used in immunotherapy. While recombinant hypoallergens are useful as therapeutics, which can be tailored to individual patients’ needs, their allergenic recombinant versions can be used as standardised and effective diagnostics. Allergies and asthma can also be linked, such as allergic asthma, which is asthma triggered by allergens. For example, thunderstorm asthma, which occurs globally, can prove deadly, as documented by the infamous 2016 Melbourne epidemic event that resulted in 10 untimely deaths and thousands seeking emergency treatment. Examining the effect of allergens in the lungs at the molecular level would paint a better picture in understanding how allergens can be so deadly and their potential links to other illnesses, such as lung cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Through the use of omics (i.e., proteomics, genomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics), biomarkers of disease and potential novel signalling mechanisms can be identified, thereby significantly contributing to clinical practice. In this Special Issue “Understanding Allergy and Asthma at the Molecular Level”, I invite you to contribute review articles and original research articles on the analysis of allergens, allergies, and asthma on a molecular level. Our collective effort in this Special Issue promises to showcase cutting edge research and research ideas that will contribute to the better diagnosis and treatment of allergies and asthma in the future, thus saving lives. I look forward to your submissions and thank you in advance for choosing the International Journal of Molecular Sciences as the home of your publications. By publishing with us, you are ensuring the maximum exposure and citation of your work, which will not only help other researchers and clinicians but also inspire our colleagues and early career researchers.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
