Special Issue Information

Aortic Stenosis (AS) impacts many patients worldwide and this burden will increase further as the population ages.  Surgical interventions and novel technologies have improved outcomes Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has revolutionized the treatment of symptomatic severe AS. TAVI has now been explored across the entire spectrum of operative risk, from inoperable to low-risk populations, in properly designed, randomized clinical trials, although data on the long-term durability of these valves are lacking. Advanced imaging planning, growing operator experience and the introduction of new transcatheter valve iterations have improved procedural safety and bioprosthetic valve performance.

Despite these promising results, opportunities remain to extend the evidence base, address unmet needs and further quantify the risks, benefits and cost-effectiveness of existing and novel technologies. This special issue will focus on current and future advancements in the surgical field to treat AS, discuss challenges to expand TAVI indications highlighting ongoing trials and identify areas of unmet needs in which continued refinements are required
