Cilia in Development: Second Edition

Dear Colleagues,

Following the success of our previous Special Issue on “Cilia in Development”, we are excited to announce the second edition. The field of cilia research has continued to grow rapidly, revealing even more intricate roles that cilia play in animal development and human disease. Cilia are now recognized as not only being essential for motility in certain cells but also as key sensory organelles that mediate vital signaling pathways, such as hedgehog, Wnt, PDGF, and Hippo, which are all critical for development and homeostasis.

In recent years, emerging evidence has connected ciliary dysfunction to an increasing number of ciliopathies and developmental disorders. The expanding understanding of these complex, often multisystem conditions, including polycystic kidney disease, Bardet–Biedl Syndrome, and Joubert Syndrome, among others, underscores the importance of ciliary biology in health and disease.

This second edition aims to highlight the latest research advances and further explore the diverse roles of cilia (motile cilia, primary cilia, nodal cilia, and flagella) and cilia-related molecules (proteins, non-coding RNAs, lipids, and small molecules) in development. We welcome studies that utilize a broad range of model organisms, from invertebrates to vertebrates, as well as human organoid systems.

We hope this updated collection will continue to drive forward the field, providing new insights into the mechanisms by which cilia contribute to both normal development and the pathogenesis of ciliopathies.

Manuscript Submission Information

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Journal of Developmental Biology is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
