Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Many small farms are susceptible to biodiversity loss, poor production, and threats of climate change. Agroforestry practices involve incorporating trees or livestocks/crops, with specific management which is intentional, intensive, integrated, and interactive, to promote the growth and establishment of the desired crops/livestock and trees on the same unit of land. Although agroforestry involves modifying the landscape, if carried out correctly, the primary productivity from that specific landscape will increase along with increase in biodiversity and resilience to climate change. The opportunities emerging with the advent of science-based knowledge, technology, and information systems encourage us to envision an agricultural renaissance in the 21st century that will be more locally sourced, fairly priced, and environmentally sustainable. However, there is a scarcity of knowledge and research on agroforestry practices in temperate ecosystems. The importance of agroforestry management for increased ecosystem services and improved farm profitability will be of enormous importance, especially for small farmers and their stakeholders. This Special Issue will provide much-needed information on the feasibility of incorporating agroforestry as an alternative cropping practice.

We envision that this proposed Special Issue entitled “Agroforestry for Enhanced Farm Profitability and Climate Resilience” will encourage researchers from multi-disciplinary fields to work collaboratively to address the challenges and opportunities in this field. We also believe it will emphasize the connection between tree-crop-livestock management, ecosystem services and farm profitability. The articles from this Special Issue will promote future research related to agroforestry, alley cropping, silvopasture, and forest farming across the temperate region and around the world.

Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
