Advanced Lithium-Based Battery Materials: Manufacturing and Recycling

Dear Colleagues,

The development of advanced lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has emerged as a critical area of research due to the pressing need for sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solutions. These developments are especially true in the automotive industry, which has rapidly begun adapting green and efficient LIB technologies within the past decade. However, despite this trend, there is still an ever-increasing need to utilize higher-performing materials (typically anodes and cathodes) to meet future energy demands.

To further advance the scientific understanding of advanced LIB materials, this Special Issue will explore the following topics:

• The latest advancements in LIB technology, covering the chemistry and technology behind the different types of cathodes and anodes used in their construction.
• The manufacturing processes used for LIB fabrication, including the creation of electrodes, assembling the cells, and testing the finished products.
• The environmental impact of lithium-ion battery production, including the use of toxic chemicals and the disposal of waste materials.
• The recycling methods of LIBs, including techniques for recovering valuable materials such as lithium and cobalt.
• Safety issues related to lithium-ion batteries, such as thermal runaway, fire hazards, and mitigation methods.
• Growing trends of LIB-based electric vehicles and the challenges facing the industry in terms of scaling up production and reducing costs.
• Challenges involved in achieving a sustainable and cost-effective recycling process.
• The future of lithium-ion batteries, including the development of solid-state batteries and the potential for using lithium–sulfur or lithium–air batteries.

Overall, the research presented in this issue aims to provide valuable insights into the advancements, challenges, and opportunities in the field of advanced lithium-based battery materials for electric vehicles. By doing so, we hope to advance the contemporary understanding of LIBs.
