Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestine characterized by continuous inflammation of the mucous membrane. Even today, after many years of research, its exact pathogenesis remains unclear, involving a complex interaction between genetic predisposition, environmental factors, immune imbalance, and modifications in the gut microbiome. The disease is a complex interaction with a genetic background, directly related to both environmental factors and modifications in the intestinal microbiome. Advances in molecular biology and immunology have enhanced our understanding. However, translating this knowledge into successful, personalized therapies remains a significant challenge. In clinical practice, the management of UC has evolved significantly with the introduction of new biologics, small molecules, and therapeutic approaches aimed at mucosal repair, sustained remission, and improved quality of life.

This Special Issue seeks to compile original research, reviews, and viewpoints that investigate recent advancements in UC, covering aspects such as disease mechanisms, diagnostic breakthroughs, emerging treatments, and long-term patient results. The objective is to gather all recent information regarding the potential development of a specialized algorithm for diagnosing and monitoring these patients, ultimately aiming to enhance their quality of life.

Innovative biological treatments, thorough examination of the disease's pathogenesis, the impact of the microbiome on disease progression or treatment success, cutting-edge molecular monitoring techniques, and the potential applications of artificial intelligence in disease diagnosis or progression prediction continue to be the main focus of this study. Suitable submissions for this Special Issue include original research articles, clinical studies (such as randomized controlled trials, observational studies, cohort analyses), systematic reviews, and meta-analyses.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Medicina is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
