Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

According to GLOBOCAN, five major gastrointestinal cancers (esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, and colorectum) account for 5 million new cases and nearly 3.5 million cancer-related deaths worldwide. Additionally, breast cancer, the most commonly diagnosed cancer globally, saw an estimated 2.3 million new cases and 685,000 deaths in 2020. These cancers, along with other endocrine-related cancers, such as those of the thyroid and adrenal glands, continue to pose significant clinical challenges. Despite advances in diagnostics, screening, and personalized medicine, many of these cancers are often diagnosed at an advanced stage, limiting treatment options and making a cure challenging to achieve.

This Special Issue of Medicina is dedicated to exploring innovative treatment strategies and the latest developments in cancer surgery. It focuses on breakthroughs in gastrointestinal, endocrine, and hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) cancer treatments and highlights cutting-edge research on implementing novel energy devices, technologies, and surgical techniques to improve outcomes in these challenging cancer types.

Topics to be covered in this Special Issue include the application of liquid biopsies and biomarkers and the benefits of indocyanine green (ICG), fluorescence-guided surgery, and 3D-model-assisted surgical planning. We also encourage the submission of data on novel interventional techniques, minimally invasive procedures, and advanced surgical management methods in gastrointestinal, endocrine, and HPB cancer surgery. Additionally, contributions focusing on innovations in postoperative management—such as enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols, stoma care, hernia prevention and treatment, and wound care—are highly encouraged. Emphasis will also be placed on integrating patient-centered care approaches, improving long-term quality of life, utilizing digital tools for follow-up, and fostering multidisciplinary collaboration in postoperative care.

We welcome submissions of original articles, clinical trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses contributing to this rapidly evolving field.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Medicina is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
