Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Bones are dynamic organs that undergo constant remodeling. Bone resorption and formation are controlled by local and systemic factors to ensure the structure of bones and regulate calcium and phosphorus levels in blood. Additionally, bone plays an endocrine function, secreting bone-derived hormones that exert an effect on the whole body metabolism.

Metabolic bone diseases are disorders in bone strength usually caused by imbalances in minerals (such as calcium or phosphorus), vitamin D and other endocrine disorders including diabetes or thyroid disease.  The most common metabolic bone diseases include osteoporosis, osteomalacia, flurosis primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), renal osteodystrophy and Paget’s disease. In clinical terms, metabolic bone diseases result in bone pain, higher risk of fractures and dysregulation of mineral levels in blood, reducing patients’ quality of life.

While our understanding of bone metabolism has increased in the last years, there are still gaps in our knowledge of the pathophysiology, diagnosis and therapy of bone metabolic disorders and their implication for the whole-body metabolism.

This Special Issue of Medical Sciences invites researchers to contribute with original research articles and reviews in all the aspects of bone metabolism. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: (1) basic studies in bone metabolism and metabolic diseases (2) the physiopathology of metabolic bone diseases (osteoporosis, osteomalacia, PHPT, renal osteodystrophy and Paget’s disease, etc) (3) preclinical treatments and diagnosis tools for bone metabolic diseases (4) other emerging areas in the bone research fields including new models for preclinical trials (e.g. microfluidics for bone diseases, bone senescence, osteoimmunology, osteomicrobiology, etc.).

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Medical Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
