Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Metabolic diseases place a significant burden on global health systems. These represent a group of interrelated systemic abnormalities that arise concomitantly and are linked to a plethora of risk factors including, but not limited to, genetic, behavioral, and environmental. The heterogeneity of metabolic diseases demands multi-pronged approaches to advance our knowledge of the mechanisms driving its development and progression.

In this Special Issue of Metabolites, our goal is to feature research describing the mechanisms leading to metabolic maladaptation in the pathogenesis of diseases. Cellular adaptation to varied stressors is strongly influenced by nutrient sensing and signaling of diverse metabolites, which in turn are orchestrated by well co-ordinated multi-organ crosstalk. Disruption of one or more of these regulatory nodes at the molecular or genetic level can impact metabolic events, contributing to the development of different metabolic diseases. Increasing evidence points towards the symbiotic relationship between gene expression and metabolism, and uncoupling of these two processes can result in the malfunctioning of cellular homeostasis. Additionally, with the advancements in genomics studies, the complex relationships between genetic variation and clinical phenotype of frequent metabolic disorders, such as type 2 diabetes and cancer, is being acknowledged. The evolution in metabolite profiling techniques has unlocked an unmatched prospect for identifying biomarkers to predict metabolic disease onset, severity, and prognosis as well as providing better understanding of the underlying mechanisms.

Articles of all categories (original research articles, reviews) pertaining to basic/fundamental science, in vivo studies, clinical/translational studies, and meta-analyses will be considered for peer-review. Proof-of-concept and technical (method development) studies will be given consideration. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Nutrient sensing and signaling in metabolic diseases;
  • Metabolic control of gene expression;
  • Systems approaches to metabolic analyses;
  • Novel tools in metabolic flux analyses;
  • Inter-organ communication in metabolic diseases.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Metabolites is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
