Natural Phenolic Compounds and Their Antioxidant Activity

Dear Colleagues,

Natural phenolic and polyphenolic compounds, including flavonoids, phenolic acids and phenylpropanoids have longstanding reputations as health-promoting food components, owing to their marked antioxidant activity. The same properties have more recently boosted their interest also in neighboring areas, such as in cosmetic science, and the valorizations of antioxidant-phenols-rich waste materials from the food industry is a growing area of interest for the green cosmetic industry and other green industries. Bioactivities and applications are related to their redox chemistry, which is still the matter of vibrant research. The synergic interaction among phenolic antioxidants or with other redox active partners is among the most vital of such areas, owing to its applications in the design of novel natural preservatives systems, and for its implications in the understanding of the role of antioxidant/prooxidant systems in human health, including in ferroptosis. Natural phenols are the building blocks of biopolymers like lignin and melanin and could serve, in turn, as building blocks, molecular scaffolds or sustainable reactants for the development of smart and green materials.

This special issue welcomes original research articles and reviews on the many aspects of the chemistry and biochemistry of natural phenols and polyphenols with particular focus, but not limited to their antioxidant properties, the molecular aspects of their bioactivity, their sustainable obtainment and valorization, their novel and/or sustainable applications and the aspects related to their analysis and characterization.

Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
