Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The use of polymeric reactive coatings for biomaterial-based scaffolds has been largely used as a strategy to bind different types of drugs and biomolecules. One of the most successful polymers is represented by polydopamine (pDA), which is cheap, effective, and does not require elaborate steps for its deposition. pDA’s unique chemical structure enables conjugation with a variety of peptides, growth factors, and other biological molecules, expanding the biological potential of many inert surfaces. However, pDA is not the only biomaterial to have this potential effect. Nature offers a great variety of designs and polymeric solutions to create reactive adhesive interfaces with defined surface properties. Identifying these new biomaterials and studying their chemical properties could be the key to expanding the available strategies necessary to obtain new interfaces for scaffolds used in biomedical applications.
Therefore, this Special Issue is open to original submissions, including manuscripts, reviews, and short communications that address this topic according to the keywords reported below. The goal of this collection is to identify or synthesize novel reactive polymeric layers and investigate their impact on the surface properties of biomedical scaffolds. Studies reporting a direct comparison in the chemical reactivity of pDA-based coatings with other types of natural or synthetic binding coatings will also be accepted. Finally, this Special issue will welcome contributions highlighting the use of these reactive polymeric layers to bind several biological molecules, including but not limited to biomimetic peptides, growth factors, and small drugs.
