Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Diabetes is a widespread metabolic disorder and results from insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion. Modifiable factors like diet, physical activity, and body weight play crucial roles in diabetes prevention, with targeted interventions reducing diabetes risk by about 60%. The intake of peptides from protein and protein hydrolysates can play a relevant role in the management of glucose homeostasis, due to their implication at different levels, including the positive regulation of incretins (GIP and GLP-1), inhibition of digestive enzymes, inhibition of DPP-IV, enhancement of cholecystokinin levels by enteroendocrine cells (a gut hormone regulating food intake), promotion of insulin secretion by pancreatic cells, or inhibition of intestinal glucose uptake. Therefore, it is critical to add protein to the diabetes nutrition plan, and it is worth more in-depth research.
