Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Aristotle in the 4th century BC claimed that “sleep occurs when the body element is dragged upwards by the heat through the veins to the head. The animal wakes up when digestion is finished, that is, when the heat that in large quantities had been concentrated by the neighboring regions within a small space prevails and the more full-bodied blood is separated from the purer one’’ (Parva Naturalia, Aristotele, 4th century BC).

Current evidence has confirmed a close association between sleep and eating disorders and weight regulation, as Aristotle previously described; however, studies remain limited with inconsistent data in the real world. Sleep and eating are mainly regulated by circadian and ultradian rhythms, neuropeptides and hormones, but they are also associated with an individual’s daily routine, in terms of habits and social and working norms, genetic factors, cultural and religious features, comorbidities and availability of time to sleep and food to consume. On the other hand, weight-related factors are linked to disordered sleep and eating patterns. Obesity can lead to sleep fragmentation and daytime sleepiness or to loss of control eating.

This Special Issue aims to further evaluate this bidirectional relationship between sleep and eating disorders and weight regulation.
