Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Competitive athletes utilize different dietary strategies to optimize overall health, exercise performance and recovery, especially during training blocks with high physiological stress. One popular dietary strategy in athletes is whole day to several day fasting or time restrictive feeding patterns. Time restricted feeding is a form of intermittent fasting, where individuals undergo 12-16 hours of fasting. Fasting has been shown to have some favorable health effects in non-athletic populations, such as reductions in body weight, fasting blood glucose, systolic blood pressure, and increased insulin sensitivity. These published health and body composition changes with fasting could also have both positive and negative health and performance impacts in athletic populations adhering to forms of a fasting or TRF diet.  Having further knowledge of how fasting affects athletes is of great interest to all professionals working with athletic populations. Therefore, the focus of this special issue is to explore how fasting, or time restricted feeding affects the health and exercise performance of athletes.
