Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The engineering of pharmaceuticals and medical devices through 3D/4D/5D printing offers unparalleled opportunities for personalized healthcare solutions, facilitating tailored treatments for individual patient needs and the creation of patient-specific implants and prosthetics. Pharmaceutical inks are being deposited layer by layer, creating a 3D medicine/medical device. The structure is based on the x, y, and z axes, whereas in 4D printing, smart materials are used to change their shape, properties, and function over time in response to external stimuli such as temperature, light, moisture, or pH changes. Three-dimensional and four-dimensional printing face challenges when printing complex geometries and curved surfaces with high mechanical strength. Five-dimensional printing can overcome these issues by using two additional axes: the rotation of the print bed and the rotation of the extruder head. Regulatory considerations and technological limitations must be addressed to fully realize the potential of 3D/4D/5D printing in healthcare. This Special Issue delves deep into the transformative potential of printing technologies in revolutionizing the production of medicines and medical devices. Review and research articles leading with printing technology optimization for medicines as well as medical devices are welcome. We also encourage the submission of articles regarding the use of novel materials and applications of printing technologies in healthcare.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Pharmaceutics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
