Dear Colleagues,
Somatic embryogenesis is a powerful in vitro culture technique, with multiple applications in genetic improvement, commercial production, and basic research.
Embryogenic cultures can be maintained by repetitive subcultures for indefinite time. However, long-term maintenance by continuous proliferation can lead to somaclonal variation and loss of embryogenic competence.
Cryopreservation is considered the only safe method for the long-term storage of plant material, including embryogenic cultures. The combined use of both, cryopreservation and somatic embryogenesis, significantly improves the application of biotechnological tools and the development of unconventional breeding strategies.
This Special Issue intends to contribute to our knowledge on cryopreservation of embryogenic cultures. For this purpose, articles focused on optimization of cryopreservation protocols for embryogenic tissues are considered for publication. Investigations exploring the physiological and molecular basis of cryopreservation of embryogenic cultures, as well as the effect of cryopreservation on the somatic embryogenesis process are also welcome.
