Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The kingdom Plantae comprises about 300000 vascular plant species worldwide. Plants are not only the major source of nutrients for animals and humans, but they also play a key role in maintaining the air quality of the earth’s atmosphere by capturing CO2 and releasing O2. However, a few plant families contain species that are capable of causing adverse effects in animals or humans, usually by the ingestion of the plant or a part of it.

Among the toxicants present in toxic plants are several kinds of alkaloids, oxalates, nitrates, saponins, lectins, protease inhibitors, toxic amino acids, glycosides and tannins, to name only a few. These toxic substances can affect every organ and tissue, including the liver, kidneys, lungs, heart, muscles, bones, nervous tissue, skin and blood.

This Special Issue will accept original articles dealing with any aspect of the toxicology of toxic plants, including, but not limited to, the biology of toxic plants (botany of toxic plants), the study of toxic compounds present in toxic plants, analytical techniques used for the determination of toxicants in plants, the adverse effects of toxic plants on experimental animals, case reports of plant toxicosis in animals and humans, and treatments of toxicosis caused by toxic plants.

We hope that this Special Issue will encourage researchers from different disciplines (botany, analytical chemistry, pathology, veterinary medicine, human medicine and toxicology in general) to consider toxic plant research as a potential field of study. In many areas of the world, research on toxic plants is still in its infancy.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Plants is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
