Dear Colleagues,
Biomass wastes are promising but often overlooked renewable sources of biofuels, biochemicals and biomaterials. Due to environmental pollution and global warming, there is an urgent need to find alternatives to fossil-based resources. In this scenario, the development and understanding of both fundamental and practical applications of biomass resources and their conversion processes and products seem to be attractive with increasing research interest.
The objective of this Special Issue is to explore innovative research on process development and optimization, catalytic/non-catalytic reaction mechanisms, thermochemical conversion, and chemi-mechanical extraction of biopolymers (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) from biomass and their characterization and applications in industrial processes. The topics include the conversion of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, and other biopolymers via thermochemical conversion technologies inducing torrefaction, pyrolysis, and gasification under both conventional and hydrothermal/microwave heated conditions. Furthermore, research works on the extraction, modification, purification and characterization of these biomass-based polymers and their application in environmentally friendly chemical processes are also covered. Topics on the life-cycle assessment and techno-economic assessment of the above-mentioned technologies are also invited in this Special Issue. Full-length original research articles, review articles and short communications related to the scope of this Special Issue are invited for submission.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Polymers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
