Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The bioprocess, which uses biomass as a raw material to produce various products, such as biochemicals, bioenergy, foods, and pharmaceuticals, is expected as a sustainable future process due to its relatively low energy consumption, eco-friendliness, and carbon neutrality. In particular, the bioeconomy for sustainable development in the growing world population is an emerging paradigm that is rapidly spreading around the world, and the demand for bioprocesses is expected to increase due to large-scale investments in the bioindustries. The major challenge of bioprocesses is to secure economic feasibility; thus, various strategies have been proposed in the development stage of new products, such as the development of new biotechnology, utilization of non-edible biomass, and improvement of efficiency of conventional processes. Process optimization of major production, such as enzymatic conversion or fermentation, is an important success factor in bioproduct development, and maximum yields can be achieved with many trials. Optimization can be estimated more efficiently using statistical methods, and it can be significantly applied to multivariate and regression analysis for correlation of factors in various emerging applied areas.

This Special Issue on “Bioprocess Design and Optimization” aims to present novel examples of process design and optimization for all bioprocesses. Topics include but are not limited to:

  • Biomass conversion (chemical or enzymatic reaction, or fermentation);
  • Biomass or organic waste utilization (2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation);
  • Bioprocess design;
  • Process optimization by statistical methodologies;

Treatment of biomass such as extraction, pretreatment, or saccharification.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
