Opportunities and Challenges in Quantum AI

Dear Colleagues,

Quantum computing and artificial intelligence (AI) are two transformative technologies, each poised to revolutionize industries by solving complex problems that are currently beyond the capabilities of classical computing. This proposal focuses on the synergy between these two fields: using quantum computing to accelerate AI processes and utilizing AI to overcome critical challenges in quantum computing.

Quantum computing has the potential to drastically improve the efficiency of AI algorithms. The field has progressed through three distinct ripples: quantum-enhanced algorithms that leverage QC for efficient linear algebra operations. These hybrid quantum–classical methods optimize quantum circuits using classical resources and quantum neuromorphic learning that taps into the intrinsic dynamics of quantum systems. On the other hand, AI can significantly improve various aspects of quantum computing. AI, especially reinforcement learning, can help develop more efficient error-correcting codes, crucial for maintaining the fidelity of quantum computations. In addition, AI tools can automate the design of quantum algorithms, reducing the complexity of quantum circuits and minimizing resource requirements. Finally, AI-based models can optimize quantum processor control and calibration, enhancing qubit stability and performance.

This Special Issue aims to explore and advance the frontiers of the interface of quantum computing and AI by addressing both theoretical and practical challenges. We seek papers that delve into the development of fault-tolerant quantum algorithms, explore the scalability of variational quantum circuits, and investigate new paradigms of computing such as quantum neuromorphic computations as well as the application of AI methods in the enhancement of quantum tasks. Contributions that enhance our understanding of quantum-enhanced learning, bridge the gap between quantum algorithms and applications, or propose innovative quantum architectures for machine learning are particularly welcome. Furthermore, we encourage submissions on the application of quantum machine learning in optimization, quantum chemistry, solving differential equations, and health care and life sciences, where QML can potentially drive significant breakthroughs. We invite researchers to submit their work on these topics, contributing to the ongoing dialogue that will shape the future of quantum machine learning and unlock its full potential.

• Quantum-inspired machine learning;
