Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Autonomous robots and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are at the forefront of technological innovation, with applications ranging from precision agriculture to environmental monitoring and urban infrastructure management. Despite significant advancements, this field still faces several critical challenges that must be addressed to unlock these technologies’ full potential. This Special Issue seeks to gather high-quality research that tackles these challenges, offering solutions which push the boundaries of what autonomous systems can achieve.

We invite researchers to contribute original articles, reviews, and case studies that address key technical challenges in autonomous robotics and UAVs, including but not limited to the following:

  • Advanced Sensing and Perception: Developing robust sensor fusion techniques and improving perception in dynamic and unstructured environments;
  • Autonomous Navigation and Path Planning: Enhancing real-time decision-making algorithms for navigating complex and cluttered spaces with minimal human intervention;
  • Swarm Robotics and Multi-Agent Systems: Investigating the coordination and control of multiple autonomous systems to achieve collective goals efficiently and reliably;
  • Energy Efficiency and Power Management: Optimizing energy consumption for extended operations, especially in battery-limited drones;
  • Safety, Security, and Ethical Considerations: Addressing the safety, cybersecurity, and ethical implications of deploying autonomous systems in public and private spaces;
  • ISAC: Using integrated sensing and communications to enhance autonomous systems and perform different tasks;
  • LLM-Enhanced Decision Support, Communication, and Context-Awareness in Autonomous Systems: Exploring the use of large language models (LLMs) to improve context-aware decision making, human–machine interaction, and communication capabilities in autonomous robots and UAVs.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
