Extreme Horizons: Investigating the Contemporary Developments in Both Old and New Forms of Extremism

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue seeks to collate research on extremism, both old and new, in the contemporary setting, particularly focusing on the intersection of these two forms. Analyses of the circumstances that inspire new extremist ideologies, groups and movements that follow them, and the actions and activities these emerging groups are most likely to engage in are encouraged.

To date, most academic approaches to studying extremism have centred solely on the old forms of extremism. While these continue to be important, it is necessary to note that in recent years a multitude of new ideologies have begun to surface that are referred to as being extreme and/or extremist, such as AntiFa and Black Lives Matter. A more asymmetric pattern is observed in the increasing number of environmental groups choosing to engage in extreme (if not necessarily extremist) activities, such as Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil. The same is true of the incel extremism movements such as QAnon, conspiracy theorists and various others. In some parts of the world, groups and movements inspired by Hindutva or a radical form of Hindu nationalism are also growing.

More than ever, the contemporary landscape of extremism has become undoubtedly complex and challenging. Therefore, this Special Issue aims to improve the understanding of extremism by elucidating on the aforementioned phenomena.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process. Social Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
