Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Recently, UNESCO published their framework for education for sustainable development 2030 in the coming decade. This UNESCO roadmap emphasizes that education for sustainability should promote future generations’ physical, social, and emotional well-being, and highlights the importance of cognitive, social, and emotional skills, including: Thinking critically, analytically, and reflectively; learning collaboratively; solving problems; making decisions in the face of uncertainty; planning, and self-efficacy. These competencies are essential for the transformation of learners into conscientious global citizens, who can solve challenging and complex problems. Education can support people in acquiring these competencies, understanding and addressing the impacts of environmental crises on well-being (with an emphasis on sustainability and health), and empower them with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes needed to become agents of change.

Due to the crucial role that education plays in promoting knowledge, awareness, skills, and actions toward health, environmental, and sustainability efforts, we suggest organizing a Special Issue focused on Education for Well-being and Sustainability: The Role of 21st Century Skills for Informed, Responsible and Active Citizenship. The goal of this Issue is to presents research papers that present the role of education for the development of informed, responsible, and active citizenship by providing opportunities for students to acquire 21st century skills in relation to health, environment, and sustainability.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome, as well as theoretical contributions. We are especially interested in studies describing research-based interventions focused on 21st century skills as well as their contribution to the development of active citizenship in relation to health, environment, and sustainability.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.
