Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rapid increase in the world’s population, expanding urbanization, and industrialization have led to the continuous deterioration of precious water resources, which now have become a matter of global concern. Clean and safe water is a basic asset for a flourishing society and thriving economy, with the sustainable management of wastewater having gained scientific attention due to treated wastewater now being considered a resource rather than a waste. This Special Issue aims to cover sources and methodologies concerning topics such as advanced treatment systems for the remediation of water and wastewater containing various types of pollutants of major concern, including pharmaceuticals, metabolites, micropollutants, priority pollutants, heavy metals, nutrients, and emerging pollutants. There has been growing interest in the development of innovative wastewater treatment technologies for the efficient management of water resources. This Special Issue could provide a suitable platform for publishing novel research on wastewater management practices and the development of hybrid and emerging technologies for the improvement of existing methods targeted toward the removal of these pollutants. This call for contributions aims to encourage the submission of papers from researchers, academicians, and industrialists focusing mainly on the efficient remediation of pollutants, advancement, and modification of existing technologies, modeling of wastewater treatment systems, and novel research dealing with the recovery and recycling of domestic and industrial effluents. The collection of relevant research papers under the umbrella of this Special Issue could help in improving the circular economy by achieving the goals of sustainable development. More specifically, this Special Issue aims to focus on, but not be limited to, the following potential topics of interest:
- Municipal/industrial wastewater treatment for sustainable development and environmental safety;
- Novel technologies for the removal of emerging pollutants;
- Wastewater treatment techniques, such as biological, chemical, thermal, and hybrid technologies;
- Wetland treatment systems;
- Hybrid bioreactor concepts;
- Nutrient recovery from wastewater;
- The fate and transport of contaminants;
- The modeling of wastewater and sludge management systems;
- Sludge treatment and disposal techniques

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
