Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Green Engineering is a foundation for sustainability. Its principles are a tool for asking the right questions, considering the right factors, and building in the right parameters. One of the goals of green engineering is to maintain or provide comfort to all people who are affected in some way over time, which is possible by creating a balance between human activities and the environment. The ultimate goal of sustainable development as one of the cornerstones of human rights is to create inclusive justice for all, including future generations. Sustainable development is a concept that societies have achieved after a more accurate and deeper understanding of theirs. It must be acknowledged that the engineering world does not have the acceptance of its past without observing the principles and foundations of sustainable development. Increased pressure from stakeholders to implement environmental management initiatives has become the rule of business for firms across industries to engage in green processes and product development. The green resource management system has progressed from the old-fashioned forms of work such as low levels of resource usage to more productive processes. In an era of increased awareness of environmental management and sustainable development of resources, green resource management refers to the practices aimed at environmental and ecological influence of the firms and it is linked with firm environmental strategy and green behaviors of employees.

We invite you to contribute to this Special Issue on “Green Engineering and Sustainable Development in Resource Management”. We welcome conceptual/empirical research articles, comprehensive reviews, and case studies grounded in scientific research methods and innovative data analyses. Papers selected for this Special Issue will be subject to a rigorous peer-review procedure with the aim of the rapid and wide dissemination of research results, developments, and applications.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research keywords may include (but are not limited to) the following:

The world in which we live is changing at a much faster and more uncontrolled rate. This situation brings with it both negative and positive changes. The textile industry is also part of this rapid change. The growth of the world’s population and the alterations in consumer habits that this change has brought with it also affect the textile industry. In particular, polluting dyehouses and the synthetic dyes used in them are harming the world. This situation is unsustainable. For this reason, the use of natural dyes instead of synthetic dyes in the coloring of textile products is increasing rapidly. In this study, a blend of 80% cotton and 20% wool was dyed with cinnamon, and its fastness and mechanical performance were tested. In addition, the dyeing results were analyzed using a spectral method, FTIR, and SEM. In this study, natural fiber blends with two different chemical structures were dyed with cinnamon in one bath. The fastness values obtained as a result of the dyeing process were very good. The grey scale value of saliva fastness determined through evaluation was 5. The observed strength increase of approximately 24% in the yarn after dyeing was also remarkable. In conclusion, environmentally friendly dyeing was carried out in this study, and a contribution was made to a sustainable world. Full article

Optimizing a Green and Sustainable Off-Grid Energy-System Design: A Real Case

In recent years, unquestionable warnings like the negative effects of CO2 emissions, the necessity of utilizing sustainable energy sources, and the rising demand for municipal electrification have been issued. Therefore, users are encouraged to provide off-grid and sustainable energy systems for their own homes and businesses, especially if they are located rurally and far from grids. Hence, this study aims to design an off-grid hybrid energy system, in order to minimize both the baseline cost of energy and the net current expenditure in the desired system. To construct such a system, wind generators (WG), photovoltaic arrays (PV), battery banks, and bi-directional converters are considered in the real case of a supermarket with a 20-year lifespan in Malmö, Sweden. Some significant assumptions, such as the usage of renewable energy resources only, electricity production close to the business location, and a maximum allowance of 0.1% unmet are incorporated. To optimize the considered problem, a particle swarm optimization (PSO) approach as developed to provide the load requirements and establish the number of WGs, PVs, and other equipment. Moreover, to verify the obtained results, the developed system was simulated using HOMER Pro software, and the results are compared and discussed. The results indicated that the designed hybrid energy system is able to perform completely off-grid, while satisfying 99.9% of the yearly electricity demand. The best results obtained by the proposed PSO offered 160, 5, and 350 PVs, WGs, and batteries, respectively, while the best solution found by the simulation method was the use of 384 PVs, 5 WGs, and 189 batteries for the considered off-grid system. This study contributes to decentralized local electrification by utilizing renewable energy sources that have the potential to revolutionize green energy solutions. Full article

Green human resource management (GHRM) and green innovation are highly important aspects for firms to achieve corporate sustainability, particularly in developing countries. This study explores the effect of GHRM and green innovation on obtaining corporate sustainability through the mediating effect of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). A quantitative approach using self-administered surveys is deployed, where a total of 192 data points were obtained from bank managers in Beirut. Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) is used for analyzing data in Smart-PLS version 3. The findings suggest that both GHRM and green innovation have positive impacts on corporate sustainability. Furthermore, the mediating effect of CSR activities has been supported in both relationships between GHRM and corporate sustainability and between green innovation and corporate sustainability. These results provide both managerial and theoretical implications that can be beneficial for scholars and practitioners alike. Full article

Recently, the relationship between green human resource management (GHRM) and environmental performance has received a lot of attention from scholars. Teaching, training, and research and development carried out in higher education institutions, which are crucial sources for the promotion of sustainability, encourage GHRM. Using signaling theory, this study aimed to deal with the different roles of green training in the Ministry of Education’s corporate environmental performance. The mediation analysis of organizational citizenship behavior towards the environment was considered and the moderation role of perceived organizational support was evaluated. A survey was prepared to analyze the opinions of managers and staff of the Ministry of Education in Iran. After collecting the surveys, 211 complete responses were analyzed and the most important results from these surveys concluded that: (1) the important tools in adopted strategies for green training improve organizational citizenship behavior towards the environment (OCB) and the Ministry of Educations’ environmental performance; (2) the role of OCB in mediating the effects of training on corporate environmental performance (CEP) is essential; (3) perceived organization support (POS) has a moderation role between green training and CEP. The education sector has been severely affected by the global pandemic of COVID-19, and the need for improvement in its aftermath became a challenge for scholars and practitioners alike. The current research focuses on the role of Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) initiatives as an independent variable that is innovation-centric, and improved innovation performance of education sector employees as the dependent variable. GHRM in the current context is described as focusing on environmental aspects within the processes and functions of work in a comprehensive manner that incorporates both resource/waste management and areas of development, as well as green behavior among members. Moreover, the mediating effect of green innovation on the aforementioned relationship and enhancing the role of environmental leadership are examined through a quantitative approach using purposive and convenience sampling techniques. Data from several universities across Northern Cyprus have been gathered with regard to the design, aims, and context of this study. With a total of 187 teachers and administrators from three different universities and using PLS-SEM for analysis, the results show that human resource departments in universities can play a major role in determining the extent of innovation performance within the organization. Green innovation as a mediator can improve the workplace environment, which can be significantly enhanced through an adequate leadership that supports such initiatives (i.e., environmental leadership). The current results can be beneficial for scholars (organizational psychology, innovation, and sustainable HRM), as well as decision-makers in the universities in Northern Cyprus as a small island. The connection of universities with new knowledge in various sciences leads to entrepreneurship and the progress of the economic development of universities. Countries with higher education institutions, in the shadow of practical research and development, are trying to strengthen the economic structure and entrepreneurship, and conduct basic research. Besides, higher education institutions are building science parks and implementing high-tech projects jointly with industry. New materials such as PVC and concrete have been created through scientific evolution between innovators and industry workers, which can be used as one of the most useful building materials. Among the advantages of these materials, we can point out their low cost compared to the high volume of their use, which has attracted the attention of most engineers, designers, employers, innovators and entrepreneurs. In this regard, the construction industry is also a huge consumer of natural resources and at the same time a waste producer, which is solved by this number of graduate students. In this article, we intend to investigate the engineering properties and environmental effects of green materials prepared with PVC waste powder using designers, innovators and entrepreneurial ideas. Many studies have been conducted on the chemical decomposition of PVC to transform PVC into other products, so investigating the possibility of recycling PVC and reusing it in the production cycle is an important issue in the discussion of waste. One of the proposed ways is to replace river sand with PVC waste to prepare concrete, which can be considered one of the environmentally friendly activities of employers, innovators and entrepreneurs. The obtained results show that there is a great demand for the production of natural materials as non-renewable materials with better support for the economy of countries such as China or with high waste. Turkey is one of the most suitable countries for solar power plants, owing to its ideal location in terms of receiving solar radiation; accordingly, plans are in place to expand its solar power plant system to fulfill the increasing energy demand. In this study, a combination of multicriteria decision-making and fuzzy logic was used to evaluate potential locations (cities in southern Turkey) to install new solar power plants subject to different criteria of an uncertain nature. The proposed methodology has several attractive features, which are described throughout this study. The criteria were selected based on the literature and the opinions of experts. In addition, a new criterion (capacity of existing solar power plants) was added to achieve more precise results. Ten criteria and eighteen cities were selected to form the decision matrix for the problem. First, the weight of each criterion was computed by stepwise weight assessment ratio analysis (SWARA). Then, the TOPSIS approach was extended to the Pythagorean fuzzy form in ranking the locations of the decision matrix as a new solution procedure. The results show that the best candidate city to install a new solar power plant is Antalya, followed by Karaman and Malatya as the second and third best candidates, respectively. Finally, to measure the impact of the changes in the weight of the criteria, a sensitivity analysis was conducted. Multiple scenarios were considered, and the results indicated that Antalya was the best alternative in most of the scenarios. Full article
