Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Over the past 15 years, our understanding of veterinary nephrology and urology has blossomed with advances in diagnostics, genetics, and clinical therapy. This has corresponded with an increase in dog and cat owners seeking advanced care for their pet as well as the recognition of the importance of a One Health initiative. Through these developments, nephrology and urology issues have emerged as frequent health concerns in dogs and cats.
Comprehensive evaluation of kidney biopsies using advanced diagnostic modalities by a trained nephropathologist, along with the identification of breed-associated genetic mutations have changed the landscape of veterinary nephrology and highlighted its high level of translation with human medicine. Novel biomarkers have been incorporated into diagnostic workflows for the diagnosis and monitoring of disease. With advances in imaging and interventional nephrology and urology, outcomes for patients with previously difficult to treat conditions are improving. There is also a growing community of researchers and clinicians working together to establish centers of excellence and provide advanced training.
The aim of this Special Issue is to highlight advances in the understanding of the diagnosis, pathology, genetics, and treatment of dogs and cats with diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract.
