Postmastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT) is an adjuvant treatment for breast cancer. Some mastectomized women undergoing PMRT can have breast reconstruction with expander implant reconstruction. However, the expander implant contains a magnetic metal port for its inflation, and in patients with a high risk of recurrence, the PMRT is performed before the expander replacement. The difficulties in radiation treatment near high-Z metals are mainly due to dose alterations around them. Therefore, this study proposes using a realistic breast phantom and gel dosimetry to investigate the effects of the metallic parts of the expandable prosthesis on the 3D delivery of the treatment. A conformal radiation treatment was planned and delivered to the gel phantom with the metal port. MAGIC-f gel was used with magnetic resonance imaging for dose assessment. The treatment plan dose distribution was compared to the measured dose distribution by gamma analysis (3%/3 mm/15% threshold). A significant gamma fail region was found near the metal port, corresponding to a dose reduction of approximately 5%. This underdose is within the tolerance threshold for dose heterogeneity established by the International Commission on Radiation Units (ICRU), but should be considered when treating these patients. Traditionally, qualifications and skills developed through formal learning have been the cornerstone of enhancing the employability of young people. However, the trajectory from education to work in contemporary society is far from linear; hence, the purpose of this paper is to evidence the potential benefits that non-formal educational practices, specifically involving sport-based interventions (SBIs), may offer to support the transition to employment. This paper presents data from 19 semi-structured interviews that were conducted with participants from organisations that either designed and/or delivered SBIs focused on enhancing employability or were from organisations that had experience of commissioning or funding sport-based employability projects. This paper outlines why SBIs may offer an effective alternative form of education to employment provision and also how SBIs enable young people to navigate non-linear education to employment transitions. Crucial to enhancing this transition is the provision of a supportive and inclusive non-formal educational environment where young people can acquire both propositional and procedural knowledge, whilst concurrently (re)connecting them with formal educational systems to expedite the transition to work. Importantly, this paper highlights that this concurrent blend of non-formal and formal education is particularly critical for young people without formal qualifications and who are furthest from an employment destination. Background: Adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) are critical to maintaining good health and hygiene. However, health is a function of many health determinants, and WASH services alone may not be sufficient to improve health outcomes. Objective: To identify whether the presence of WaSH services is associated with fewer children under five years of age experiencing symptoms of diarrhea in Katoma, Geita, Tanzania. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted to collect health data, demographics, and other variables, such as WASH, food insecurity, education of the mother, vaccination data, and household income data, for 452 households with children under five. Surveys were completed in-person through interviews. Health outcome data included being sick with diarrhea or symptoms. Data analysis was performed using SAS OnDemand for Academics. Multivariate logistic regression and mixed-effects logistic regression models were employed to determine the association between the covariates and sickness of inclusion children and all the children involved in the study, respectively. Results: The findings suggest that WASH services alone do not have a significant impact on diarrhea, but other determinants of health, including the education of the mother, showed a significant impact on health outcomes among children with at least one WASH service. These demographic variables were also associated with lower food insecurity and poverty. The findings highlight the need to (1) include other covariates when analyzing WASH data to understand health outcomes; and (2) improve education attainment for women to maximize health benefits for their children. Organic violet-blue fluorescent materials have garnered significant interest for a broad spectrum of applications. A series of triazine-based molecules, that is, 2,4,6-tri(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-1,3,5-triazine (TCZT), 2,4,6-tri(1H-indol-1-yl)-1,3,5-triazine (TIDT), and 2,4,6-tris(3,6-di-tert-butyl-9H-carbazol-9-yl)-1,3,5-triazine (TDBCZT), exhibiting violet-blue emission were synthesized via a catalyst-free aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction. These compounds possess a non-planar and twisted structure with favorable charge-transfer characteristics, demonstrating excellent thermal stability (decomposition temperatures of 370 °C, 384 °C, and 230 °C, respectively). Cyclic voltammetry analysis, combined with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level, offered detailed insights into their electronic structures and electrochemical properties. Optical properties were systematically characterized using Ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The compounds exhibited violet-blue luminescence with emission peaks located at 397 nm, 383 nm, and 402 nm in toluene, respectively. In their respective films, the compounds exhibited varying degrees of spectral shifts, with emission peaks at 408 nm, 381 nm, and 369 nm. Moreover, the CIE (Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage) coordinates of TIDT in toluene were (0.155, 0.067), indicative of excellent violet purity. These compounds demonstrated significant two-photon absorption (TPA) properties, with cross-sections of 4.6 GM, 15.3 GM, and 7.4 GM, respectively. Notably, they exhibited large molar absorptivities and substantial photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs), suggesting their potential for practical applications as violet-blue fluorescent materials. The European Commission’s ban on routine tail docking has prompted this retrospective observational study to evaluate the short-term effects of transitioning to a fully undocked system. Twenty-two farms were assessed during three subsequent phases: total tail docking (step 1), subgroups of undocked pigs (step 2), and fully undocked pigs (step 3). Farmers received training in long-tail management and independently implemented it on their own farms. However, straw provision as environmental enrichment was mandatory, at least supplied during periods of pigs’ restlessness. Overall, going through step 2 appears to be successful. However, transitioning to step 3 worsened mortality (p = 0.010) and the feed conversion ratio (p = 0.015) in weaners. Compared to step 1, the cost of producing 1 kg of meat in step 3 was 33.9% greater during weaning and 7.4% during fattening. Tail lesion prevalence at slaughter was greater in step 3 (41%), followed by step 2 (10%) and step 1 (1%). The hypothetical labour required to optimize straw management compared to the adopted system, ensuring its continuous availability, was estimated as 35 min/100 piglets/weaning cycle (EUR 4.37) and 10.5 h/100 pigs/fattening cycle (EUR 109). Under the conditions of this study, transitioning to a fully undocked system was not successful. Mandating only the non-continuous use of straw has proven insufficient, and greater efforts must be systematically implemented. Full article

ZrBr4-Mediated Phase Engineering in CsPbBr3 for Enhanced Operational Stability of White-Light-Emitting Diodes

The persistent operational instability of all-inorganic cesium lead halide (CsPbX3) perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) has hindered their integration into white-light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). This study introduces a transformative approach by engineering a phase transition from CsPbBr3 NCs to zirconium bromide (ZrBr4)-stabilized hexagonal nanocomposites (HNs) through a modified hot-injection synthesis. Structural analyses revealed that the ZrBr4-mediated phase transformation induced a structurally ordered lattice with minimized defects, significantly enhancing charge carrier confinement and radiative recombination efficiency. The resulting HNs achieved an exceptional photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 92%, prolonged emission lifetimes, and suppressed nonradiative decay, attributed to effective surface passivation. The WLEDs with HNs enabled a breakthrough luminous efficiency of 158 lm/W and a record color rendering index (CRI) of 98, outperforming conventional CsPbX3-based devices. The WLEDs exhibited robust thermal stability, retaining over 80% of initial emission intensity at 100 °C, and demonstrated exceptional operational stability with negligible PL degradation during 50 h of continuous operation at 100 mA. Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.35, 0.32) validated pure white-light emission with high chromatic fidelity. This work establishes ZrBr4-mediated HNs as a paradigm-shifting material platform, addressing critical stability and efficiency challenges in perovskite optoelectronics and paving the way for next-generation, high-performance lighting solutions. The pseudoranges of a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) meta-signal can be reconstructed from the observations of its side-band components. More specifically, the Hatch–Melbourne–Wübbena (HMW) code-carrier combination is used to solve the ambiguity associated to the wide-lane carrier phase combination of the side-band components, obtaining a high-accuracy pseudorange. The HMW and the wide-lane combinations thus play a key role in constructing meta-signal measurements. The theory of GNSS meta-signals was recently extended to the case with a number of components equal to a power of two. This theory can be used to generalize HMW and wide-lane combinations to the quad-frequency case. This is carried out through a Hadamard matrix of order four, which defines a narrow-lane and three wide-lane combinations. This paper characterizes meta-signal-inspired quad-frequency HMW and wide-lane measurements combinations using Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) observations. Two professional Septentrio PolarRx5S multi-frequency, multi-constellation receivers were set up in a zero-baseline configuration and used to collect observables from all the BDS open frequencies. These measurements are used to characterize different quad-frequency HMW and wide-lane carrier combinations. Some of the combinations analyzed have large equivalent wavelengths and have the potential to enable single-epoch ambiguity resolution in scenarios where short convergence times are required. This article explores the role of religion in nation-building by examining its public dimensions within the evolving context of secularism in Québec. By examining the shift from open secularism, recommended by the Bouchard–Taylor Commission report of Building the Future, a Time for Reconciliation (2008), to a more rigid form under Bill 21, the study critiques Bill 21’s marginalization of religious minorities and explores the broader tension between state neutrality and religious participation in public life. Drawing on Rajeev Bhargava’s concept of “principled distance”, the author advocates for a flexible secular framework that balances institutional neutrality with ethical commitments to equity and justice. Through case studies, including the accommodation of Sikh turbans in the RCMP and the United Church of Canada’s support for same-sex marriage, the article illustrates how religious engagement fosters bridging social capital and enacts public religion, thereby enriching democratic discourse. This article insists on the limitations of rigid secularism in its dealings with pluralism and proposes that principled distance offers a more inclusive approach, allowing constructive religious contributions to civic life without undermining secular governance. Ultimately, the study promotes a vision of secularism that honors differences and encourages religious participation in nation-building. Full article

From the Christian heartland of Europe emerged the techno-scientific culture borne from the Enlightenment movement. Prior to this cultural outlook that severed culture from its foundational roots in religion, it was the case that religion was not only a crucial agent in the shaping of culture, but in many ways, the heart of culture. With secular rationality and its underscoring of the techno-scientific mindset, a growing privatization of religion has become the acceptable ethos of contemporary Western culture. Secularism, largely understood in terms of a naked public sphere, is increasingly perceived to be the only form of rationality that can guarantee societal cohesion and the democratic spirit. But as Ratzinger pointed out in his 1993 Hong Kong Address to the Doctrinal Commissions of the Bishops Conferences of Asia, this Western understanding of culture that is governed by a hermeneutic of suspicion towards religion, and which seeks to replace the heart of culture with autonomous reason a la Kant, ends up leaving culture in a winter land of existential frostiness. By depriving culture of its roots in the transcendental dimensions of human experience, much of the wisdom and riches that have been accumulated in the pre-techno-scientific cultures—regarding fundamental questions such as “Who am I?”, “Why am I here?”, “What is the meaning of life?”, “What happens when I die?”, “Does life make sense?”, “Do I have a destiny?” and more—are now left to the manufactured logic of the techno-scientific with its anthropological reductionism that fails to offer the big picture of the cultural outlook that did not construe the scientific and the technological as antithetical to religion. This essay seeks to unpack the arguments Ratzinger made in this Address at Hong Kong, with the hope that this theological exegesis of the Hong Kong lecture could once again offer an invitation to the world of the techno-scientific, the world of secular rationality, to open up to the world of faith, so that together, the breadth and depth of the human culture would once again flourish in its greatness. Zearalenone (ZEN), a mycotoxin, is toxic to skeletal muscle, and the solution to alleviate its damage remains unknown. Here, we analyzed the toxic effect of ZEN on muscle and the mitigation of antioxidants (GSH, NMN, and melatonin) for this toxicity. The results showed that 0.02 mmol/L ZEN inhibited myoblast viability and myogenic differentiation, accompanied by reducing Type I and Type IIA and increasing Type IIX myofibers. Antioxidants (NMN with 0.5 mmol/L, GSH with 1 mmol/L, and melatonin with 1 mmol/L) rescued these phenotypes. Mice that were delivered 3 mg/kg body weight (BW)/day of ZEN by gavage for 35 days exhibited a similar trend of muscle fiber composition, but the gavage of antioxidants (NMN with 500 mg/kg BW/day, GSH with 300 mg/kg BW/day, and melatonin with 100 mg/kg BW/day) abolished this phenotype. Mechanistically, ZEN treatment increased ROS production, resulting in oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and, subsequently, myofiber changes. Additionally, ZEN indirectly contributed to its damage, decreasing the abundance of Lactobacillus at the genus level and increasing Streptococcus sp. at the species level, which was associated with lactic acid production. Antioxidants partially rescued this microbiota composition. This study explores ZEN toxicity effects and alleviation of antioxidants, which provides new insights and attenuation solutions for ZEN damage to skeletal muscle. However, the underlying molecular mechanism of ZEN and antioxidants in the skeletal muscle still needs to be explored. Full article

A hoisting machine is one of the main components of an underground mine process line. The drive systems currently used in these machines are based on direct current, synchronous, or induction (AC) motors. Power electronic converters are used to power and control the speed of the motor, the type and function of which depend on the type of motor. Choosing the right motor is the most important part of the design process. The decision must be based on an evaluation of technical and economic parameters. This article describes the most popular types of hoisting machine drive systems. Four motors that could potentially be used to build a hoisting machine with the assumed parameters were analysed. The selection of the motor was made based on the analyses carried out, and the implementation of the investment and commissioning of the machine with the selected motor confirmed the validity of this choice. The technical–economic analysis of the motor selection for this hoisting machine made it possible to determine how to choose a motor for a specific shaft hoist. The information contained in this article can serve as a guideline during in-depth analyses of motor selection for modernised or constructed hoisting machines due to the possibility of generalising its conclusions. This study compared the impacts of five temporary vegetation measures (turfing 300 cm (TF-300 cm), turfing 75 cm (TF-75 cm), grass seeding 300 cm (GS-300 cm), grass seeding 75 cm (GS-75 cm), and synthetic turf (ST)) on the dynamic processes of runoff and sediment yield as well as hydraulic parameters under simulated rainfall experiments. A 30° bare slope (BS) was set up as the control. The results indicated that (1) all measures delayed the onset of runoff by 57–233%, effectively decreasing the runoff rate and the average erosion rate by 45–49% and 91–99%, respectively; (2) these measures reduced the average Reynolds number by 45–52% and diminished both the average runoff shear force and runoff power by 44–60%; and (3) the effectiveness in reducing runoff and sediment loss ranked as follows: turfing > synthetic turf > grass seeding, When these measures are applied locally to the bottom 25% of the slope, the efficiency of runoff and sediment reduction can exceed 89% for the entire slope. Our findings provide valuable insights for designing temporary vegetation measures in construction. Full article

Using Intensified Flotation Cells to Improve Cleaning Circuit Performance

The cleaning circuit of the collective Cu-Mo flotation plant at Collahuasi (north of Chile) consisted of two parallel flotation rows, each one of three first cleaner cells in series with six cleaner–scavenger cells. The second cleaner consisted of 10 parallel columns (6 rectangular and 4 circular), whose tailings were directly recycled to the first cleaner. Recently, a project was developed to upgrade the cleaning circuit by decreasing the large Mo circulating load and improving the cleaning circuit performance. For this purpose, a testing strategy was set up at a pilot scale to evaluate the use of intensified flotation (Jameson cells), mainly for collecting the fine Mo particles accumulated in the circulating load, which contributes to the Mo losses from the scavenger stage into the final tailings. The preliminary results regarding kinetics at the pilot scale showed good potential to improve the metallurgical performance of Mo and Cu, and a sensitivity study was carried out to evaluate the application of this technology in the industrial cleaning circuit. Then, two parallel Jameson cells were selected to re-treat the whole column tailings stream. This operation allowed for the generation of a direct final Cu-Mo concentrate (that joins the columns concentrate) while recycling their tailings to the first cleaner. After commissioning, three sampling campaigns were performed on the whole flotation plant, particularly on the overall cleaning circuit, to evaluate the impact of the new flotation cells. Results showed that the Jameson cells effectively decreased the minerals circulating loads in the cleaning stage, mainly for Mo (in 49%). The Jameson cells directly contribute 48% of Mo and 25% Cu of the minerals in the final concentrate and allow for increasing the Mo final grade (0.45% Mo vs. 0.29% from columns). These results were in good agreement with predictions from the pilot testing. Full article

In 2011, the European Union Member States adopted a new system for updating the European Commission under Article 12 of the Birds Directive (2009/147/EC), and every six years, Member States will report on measures taken to conserve birds. The main assessment is carried out on the basis of species censuses and their temporal trends. Regrettably, however, the assessment only takes into account the species at the global level and not the recognized valid subspecies, which represent important tesserae of taxonomic diversity. This paper constructively discusses some of the results of the fourth assessment and proposes some modifications to future assessments to achieve more inclusive results of at-risk subspecies. Drivers’ Welfare and Pollutant Emission Induced by Ride-Hailing Platforms’ Pricing Strategies

We build two multiple-stage game-theoretical models to capture how a ride-hailing platform’s ex-ante and ex-post pricing strategies induce show-up drivers’ strategic inter-area relocations. In both models, the platform operates its ride-hailing service in a two-area city, where the realizations of ride-hailing demand and supply are spatially asynchronous. Based on the subgame perfect equilibria, we show that show-up drivers’ relocation equilibria induced by the platform’s pricing strategy are not unique but that the equilibrium multiplicity does not affect the platform’s profit. Further, we find that the commission rate has non-monotonic discontinuous impacts on the platform’s profitability, drivers’ welfare, and pollutant emission under both pricing strategies. The continuous impact of an increase in the commission rate leads to a win–loss outcome for the platform and drivers without any effect on the environment, while the jumps result in a loss–win–win outcome for the platform, drivers, and the environment. We finally reveal that, relative to the ex-ante pricing strategy, the ex-post pricing strategy always benefits the platform at the cost of environmental pollution and enhances (reduces) drivers’ welfare when the relocation cost is sufficiently low (high).
