Stealth reconfigurable transmitarray antennas (RTAs) are essential components in wireless communication and radar detection systems. Therefore, in this study, we propose a 1-bit RTA with out-of-band radar cross-section (RCS) reduction. The antenna consists of an absorptive frequency selective transmission (AFST) layer and RTA layer separated by air. Specifically, the AFST layer achieves out-of-band RCS reduction and in-band transmission utilizing the first three resonant modes of a bent metallic strip with a centrally loaded resistor. Meanwhile, the RTA layer adopts a receiver–transmitter structure with an active receiving dipole and a passive orthogonal transmitting dipole. 1-bit phase shift is achieved by alternating two pin diodes integrated on the active dipole to reverse its current direction. To evaluate the proposed design, a 16 × 16-element prototype was designed, fabricated, and measured. For scattering, the bandwidth of 10 dB RCS reduction was about 52.5% and 43.8%, respectively. For radiation, the measured gain was 20.1 dBi at 7.5 GHz, corresponding to an aperture efficiency of 12.7%. The gain loss of beam scans to ±60° was about 5 dB in both two principal planes. Background: Ricin, a toxin extracted from the seeds of Ricinus communis, is classified as a ribosome-inactivating protein. The A-subunit of ricin shows RNA N-glycosidase activity that cleaves ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and exhibits toxicity by inhibiting protein synthesis and inducing vascular leak syndrome. Methods: In this study, we created a truncated version of the previously developed R51 ricin vaccine (RTA 1-194 D75C Y80C) through in silico analysis. Results: The resulting R51-3 vaccine showed a more-than-six-fold increase in soluble protein expression when compared to R51, with over 85% solubility. In a pilot toxicity test, no toxicity was observed in hematological and biochemical parameters in BALB/c mice and New Zealand white rabbits following five repeated administrations of R51-3. Furthermore, R51-3 successfully protected mice and rabbits from a 20 × LD50 ricin challenge after three intramuscular injections spaced 2 weeks apart. Similarly, monkeys that received three injections of R51-3 survived a 60 µg/kg ricin challenge. Conclusions: These findings support R51-3 as a promising candidate antigen for ricin vaccine development. Full article

Background: Adults who have incomplete distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA) may present with recurrent urolithiasis due to metabolic acidosis, leading to bone resorption, which in turn causes hypercalciuria and urine alkalinization (pH > 6.0). Oral potassium citrate is the most commonly used treatment for dRTA, but some patients cannot tolerate this treatment. The objective of this single-arm study was to evaluate the effect of phytate, an inhibitor of bone resorption, on calciuria of patients with incomplete dRTA. Methods: The calciuria levels of 16 patients who had incomplete dRTA with urolithiasis and could not tolerate potassium citrate treatment were recorded before (baseline) and after 6 months of treatment with oral calcium magnesium phytate (380 mg every 12 h). There were no dietary modifications or other treatments. Results: The baseline calciuria was 317 ± 81 mg/24 h and the level after 6 months was 221 ± 38 mg/24 h (p < 0.005). Conclusions: Our results suggest that calcium magnesium phytate should be considered as an alternative or adjunctive treatment for hypercalciuria in patients with incomplete dRTA. Full article

Ultra Wide-Band (UWB) sensing has gained popularity in relative localization applications. Many localization solutions rely on using Time of Flight (ToF) sensing based on a beacon–tag system, which requires four or more beacons in the environment for 3D localization. A lesser researched option is using Angle of Arrival (AoA) readings obtained from UWB antenna pairs to perform relative localization. In this paper, we present a UWB platform called ReLoki that can be used for ranging and AoA-based relative localization in 3D. To enable AoA, ReLoki utilizes the geometry of antenna arrays. In this paper, we present a system design for localization estimates using a Regular Tetrahedral Array (RTA), Regular Orthogonal Array (ROA), and Uniform Square Array (USA). The use of a multi-antenna array enables fully onboard infrastructure-free relative localization between participating ReLoki modules. We also present studies demonstrating sub-50cm localization errors in indoor experiments, achieving performance close to current ToF-based systems, while offering the advantage of not relying on static infrastructure. This study examined the profile of patients and the impact of diet on the risk of brushite stone formation under controlled, standardized conditions. Sixty-five patients with brushite nephrolithiasis were enrolled in the study. Metabolic, dietary, and 24 h urinary parameters were collected under the habitual, self-selected diet of the patients and the balanced mixed, standardized diet. The [13C2]oxalate absorption, ammonium chloride, and calcium loading tests were conducted. All patients had at least one abnormality on the usual diet, with hypercalciuria (84.6%), increased urine pH (61.5%), and hyperphosphaturia (43.1%) being the most common. Absorptive hypercalciuria was present in 32.1% and hyperabsorption of oxalate in 41.2%, while distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA) was noted in 50% of brushite stone formers. The relative supersaturation of brushite did not differ between patients with and without dRTA. Among all recent brushite-containing calculi, 61.5% were mixed with calcium oxalate and/or carbonate apatite. The relative supersaturation of brushite, apatite, and calcium oxalate decreased significantly under the balanced diet, mainly due to the significant decline in urinary calcium, phosphate, and oxalate excretion. Dietary intervention was shown to be effective and should be an integral part of the treatment of brushite stone disease. Further research on the role of dRTA in brushite stone formation is needed. A novel reconfigurable transmitarray (RTA) with two-dimensional (2D) wide beam steering capability is presented herein. Different from the traditional RTA with the discrete phase compensation (one-bit or multi-bits phase shift), a second order parallel bandpass filter model is used to realize the RTA elements with a 180° continuous phase compensation. A sandwich structure composed of the two patches with rectangular slots and the middle ground sheet with the cruciform slot is constructed for the phase shift characteristics of the frequency selective surface (FSS), and two varactor diodes are loaded across the rectangular slots on the two top and bottom patches. The simulated results show that the proposed elements could achieve continuous transmission phase compensation from 0° to 180° with a 3 dB insert loss within the operating band of 11.8–12.6 GHz. The RTA prototype with 16×16 elements and an aperture size of 6λ0×6λ0 at 12.2 GHz is fabricated and measured for experimental verification. The measured results show that its beam scanning range can reach ±50° in both horizontal and vertical planes with a peak gain of 22.76 dBi and a aperture efficiency of 24.65%. Furthermore, the sidelobe levels (SLLs) are lower than −17.8 dB, which is much better than most RTAs. The proposed RTA has potential applications in radar, microwave imaging and wireless communication systems with low-cost fabrication and a stable performance. Full article

Vacuolar ATPases (V-ATPases) are multi-subunit ATP-dependent proton pumps necessary for cellular functions, including pH regulation and membrane fusion. The evidence suggests that the V-ATPase a-subunit’s interaction with the membrane signaling lipid phosphatidylinositol (PIPs) regulates the recruitment of V-ATPase complexes to specific membranes. We generated a homology model of the N-terminal domain of the human a4 isoform (a4NT) using Phyre2.0 and propose a lipid binding domain within the distal lobe of the a4NT. We identified a basic motif, K234IKK237, critical for interaction with phosphoinositides (PIP), and found similar basic residue motifs in all four mammalian and both yeast a-isoforms. We tested PIP binding of wildtype and mutant a4NT in vitro. In protein lipid overlay assays, the double mutation K234A/K237A and the autosomal recessive distal renal tubular-causing mutation K237del reduced both PIP binding and association with liposomes enriched with PI(4,5)P2, a PIP enriched within plasma membranes. Circular dichroism spectra of the mutant protein were comparable to wildtype, indicating that mutations affected lipid binding, not protein structure. When expressed in HEK293, wildtype a4NT localized to the plasma membrane in fluorescence microscopy and co-purified with the microsomal membrane fraction in cellular fractionation experiments. a4NT mutants showed reduced membrane association and decreased plasma membrane localization. Depletion of PI(4,5)P2 by ionomycin caused reduced membrane association of the WT a4NT protein. Our data suggest that information contained within the soluble a4NT is sufficient for membrane association and that PI(4,5)P2 binding capacity is involved in a4 V-ATPase plasma membrane retention. In this study, non-stoichiometry lead-free piezoelectric ceramic Li0.058(K0.48Na0.535)0.966(Nb0.9Ta0.1)O3 (LKNNT) thick films were deposited on Pt/Ti/Si substrates using spin-coating method technology to form a LKNNT/Pt/Ti/Si structure of the micro-pressure thick films. Additionally, the influence on the crystalline properties, surface microstructure images, and mechanical properties, and the piezoelectric properties of the non-stoichiometry lead-free piezoelectric ceramic Li0.058(K0.48Na0.535)0.966(Nb0.9Ta0.1)O3 (LKNNT) thick films were observed, analyzed, and calculated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), focused ion beam (FIB) microscopy, nano-indention technology, and other instruments. This study was divided into two parts: The first part was the investigation into the fabrication parameters and properties of the bottom layer (Pt) and buffer layer (Ti). The Pt/Ti/Si structures were achieved by the DC sputtering method, and then the rapid thermal annealing (RTA) post-treatment process was used to re-arrange the grains and reduce defects in the lead-free Li0.058(K0.48Na0.535)0.966(Nb0.9Ta0.1)O3 (LKNNT) thick films. In the second part, lead-free Li0.058(K0.48Na0.535)0.966(Nb0.9Ta0.1)O3 (LKNNT) powder was prepared by the solid-state reaction method, and then acetic acid (C2H4O2) solvent was added to form a slurry for spin-coating technology processing. The fabrication parameters, thick film micro-structure, crystalline properties, nano-indention technology, and the piezoelectric coefficient characteristics of the developed lead-free Li0.058(K0.48Na0.535)0.966(Nb0.9Ta0.1)O3 (LKNNT)/Pt/Ti/Si structure of the micro-pressure thick film devices a were investigated. According to the experimental results, the optimal fabrication processing parameters of the lead-free Li0.058(K0.48Na0.535)0.966(Nb0.9Ta0.1)O3 (LKNNT) were an RTA temperature of 500 °C, a Ti buffer-layer thickness of 273.9 nm, a Pt bottom electrode-layer thickness of 376.6 nm, a theoretical density of LKNNT of 4.789 g/cm3, a lattice constant of 3.968 × 10−8 cm, and a d33 value of 150 pm/V. Finally, regarding the mechanical properties of the micro-pressure devices for when a microforce of 3 mN was applied, the thick film revealed a hardness of 60 MPa, a Young’s modulus of 13 GPa, and an elasticity interval of 1.25 μm, which are suitable for future applications of micro-pressure devices. Distal renal tubular acidosis (DRTA) has been reported in association with autoimmune diseases, such as Sjögren’s syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune thyroiditis. Whether we talk about the complete or incomplete form of DRTA associated with autoimmune diseases, the real incidence is unknown because asymptomatic patients usually are not identified, and most of the reported cases are diagnosed due to severe symptoms secondary to hypokalemia, a frequent finding in these cases. The mechanisms involved in DRTA in patients with autoimmune diseases are far from being fully elucidated and most of the data has come from patients with Sjögren’s syndrome. This review will present different hypotheses raised to explain this association. Also, aiming for a better understanding of the association between autoimmune diseases and DRTA, our review summarizes data from 37 case reports published in the last five years. We will emphasize data regarding clinical presentation, biological alterations, treatment and outcome. A very important question is whether immunosuppressive therapy is helpful in DRTA associated with autoimmune diseases. Because the pathology is rather rare, treatment is not standardized, and reported results are often contradictory. Corticosteroids are frequently used, but multiple other immunosuppressive drugs have been proposed and will be approached in this review. Full article

Roots are essential organs for a plant’s ability to absorb water and obtain mineral nutrients, hence they are critical to its development. Plants use root architectural alterations to improve their chances of absorbing nutrients when their supply is low. Nine root traits of a Brassica napus association panel were explored in hydroponic-system studies under low potassium (K) stress to unravel the genetic basis of root growth in rapeseed. The quantitative trait loci (QTL) and candidate genes for root development were discovered using a multilocus genome-wide association study (ML-GWAS). For the nine traits, a total of 453 significant associated single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci were discovered, which were then integrated into 206 QTL clusters. There were 45 pleiotropic clusters, and qRTA04-4 and qRTC04-7 were linked to TRL, TSA, and TRV at the same time, contributing 5.25–11.48% of the phenotypic variance explained (PVE) to the root traits. Additionally, 1360 annotated genes were discovered by examining genomic regions within 100 kb upstream and downstream of lead SNPs within the 45 loci. Thirty-five genes were identified as possibly regulating root-system development. As per protein–protein interaction analyses, homologs of three genes (BnaC08g29120D, BnaA07g10150D, and BnaC04g45700D) have been shown to influence root growth in earlier investigations. The QTL clusters and candidate genes identified in this work will help us better understand the genetics of root growth traits and could be employed in marker-assisted breeding for rapeseed adaptable to various conditions with low K levels. In this paper, we proposed a Regular Tetrahedral Array (RTA) to cope with various types of sensors expected in Ultra-Wideband (UWB) localization requiring all-directional detection capability and high accuracy, such as indoor Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices at diverse locations, UAVs performing aerial navigation, collision avoidance and takeoff/landing guidance. The RTA is deployed with four synchronized Ultra-Wideband (UWB) transceivers on its vertexes and configured with arbitrary aperture. An all-directional DOA estimation algorithm using combined TDoA and wrapped PDoA was conducted. The 3D array RTA was decomposed into four planar subarrays solved as phased Uniform Circular Array (UCA) respectively. A new cost function based on geometric identical and variable neighborhood search strategy using TDoA information was proposed for ambiguity resolution. In this study, the efficient fabrication of nickel silicide (NiSix) Schottky barrier thin-film transistors (SB-TFTs) via microwave annealing (MWA) technology is proposed, and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) inverters are implemented in a simplified process using ambipolar transistor properties. To validate the efficacy of the NiSix formation process by MWA, NiSix is also prepared via the conventional rapid thermal annealing (RTA) process. The Rs of the MWA NiSix decreases with increasing microwave power, and becomes saturated at 600 W, thus showing lower resistance than the 500 °C RTA NiSix. Further, SB-diodes formed on n-type and p-type bulk silicon are found to have optimal rectification characteristics at 600 W microwave power, and exhibit superior characteristics to the RTA SB-diodes. Evaluation of the electrical properties of NiSix SB-TFTs on excimer-laser-annealed (ELA) poly-Si substrates indicates that the MWA NiSix junction exhibits better ambipolar operation and transistor performance, along with improved stability. Furthermore, CMOS inverters, constructed using the ambipolar SB-TFTs, exhibit better voltage transfer characteristics, voltage gains, and dynamic inverting behavior by incorporating the MWA NiSix source-and-drain (S/D) junctions. Therefore, MWA is an effective process for silicide formation, and ambipolar SB-TFTs using MWA NiSix junctions provide a promising future for CMOS technology. Full article

Gallium oxide (Ga2O3) is a semiconductor with a wide bandgap of ~5.0 eV and large breakdown voltages (>8 MV·cm−1). Among the crystal phases of Ga2O3, the monoclinic β-Ga2O3 is well known to be suitable for many device applications because of its chemical and thermal stability. The crystalline quality of polycrystalline β-Ga2O3 films on c-plane sapphire substrates was studied by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) following magnetron sputtering deposition at room temperature. Polycrystalline β-Ga2O3 films are relatively simple to prepare; however, their crystalline quality needs enhancement. The β-phase was achieved at 900 °C with a crystallite size and d-spacing of 26.02 and 0.2350 nm, respectively, when a mixture of ε- and β-phases was observed at temperatures up to 800 °C. The strain was released in the annealed Ga2O3 films at 900 °C; however, the clear and uniform orientation was not perfect because of the increased oxygen vacancy in the film at that temperature. The improved polycrystalline β-Ga2O3 films with dominant (−402)-oriented crystals were obtained at 900 °C for 45 min under a N2 gas atmosphere. Full article

This paper demonstrates the enhanced NO2 sensing performance of graphene with defects generated by rapid thermal annealing (RTA). A high temperature of RTA (300–700 °C) was applied to graphene under an argon atmosphere to form defects on sp2 carbon lattices. The density of defects proportionally increased with increasing the RTA temperature. Raman scattering results confirmed significant changes in sp2 bonding. After 700 °C RTA, ID/IG, I2D/IG, and FWHM (full width at half maximum)(G) values, which are used to indirectly investigate carbon-carbon bonds’ chemical and physical properties, were markedly changed compared to the pristine graphene. Further evidence of the thermally-induced defects on graphene was found via electrical resistance measurements. The electrical resistance of the RTA-treated graphene linearly increased with increasing RTA temperature. Meanwhile, the NO2 response of graphene sensors increased from 0 to 500 °C and reached maximum (R = ~24%) at 500 °C. Then, the response rather decreased at 700 °C (R = ~14%). The results imply that rich defects formed at above a critical temperature (~500 °C) may damage electrical paths of sp2 chains and thus deteriorate NO2 response. Compared to the existing functionalization process, the RTA treatment is very facile and allows precise control of the NO2 sensing characteristics, contributing to manufacturing commercial low-cost, high-performance, integrated sensors. In this study, piezoelectric zinc oxide (ZnO) thin film was deposited on the Pt/Ti/SiNx/Si substrate to construct the FBAR device. The Pt/Ti multilayers were deposited on SiNx/Si as the bottom electrode and the Al thin film was deposited on the ZnO piezoelectric layer as the top electrode by a DC sputtering system. The ZnO thin film was deposited onto the Pt thin film by a radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering system. The cavity on back side for acoustic reflection of the FBAR device was achieved by KOH solution and reactive ion etching (RIE) processes. The crystalline structures and surface morphologies of the films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The optimized as-deposited ZnO thin films with preferred (002)-orientation were obtained under the sputtering power of 80 W and sputtering pressure of 20 mTorr. The crystalline characteristics of ZnO thin films and the frequency responses of the FBAR devices can be improved by using the rapid thermal annealing (RTA) process. The optimized annealing temperature and annealing time are 400 °C and 10 min, respectively. Finally, the FBAR devices with structure of Al/ZnO/Pt/Ti/SiNx/Si were fabricated. The frequency responses showed that the return loss of the FBAR device with RTA annealing was improved from −24.07 to −34.66 dB, and the electromechanical coupling coefficient (kt2) was improved from 1.73% to 3.02% with the resonance frequency of around 3.4 GHz.
