Background/Objectives: As a result of demographic change in Germany, the number of people in need of care is steadily increasing, with a correspondingly larger proportion of care being provided by family members at home. Family caregivers face significant challenges in providing such care, particularly when balancing work responsibilities. Many experience a loss of income due to reduced working hours or the necessity of leaving the labor market. Additional caregiving costs, such as medical expenses, transportation, and home modifications, further exacerbate their financial burden. Methods: This study consists of an online survey, which included the German version of the Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool (CSNAT), designed to assess the support needs of family caregivers. Respondents were asked to describe their support needs in open-text responses. To illustrate their experiences, a qualitative content analysis was conducted. Results: Out of the 320 questionnaires, 304 of them contained open-text responses that could be analyzed. Important themes included the need for support in the workplace, financial security, and assistance with administrative barriers. In addition to more flexible working hours and greater understanding from employers, the need for financial compensation for loss of working time was expressed. Conclusions: Despite a growing awareness of the gaps in support, the needs of family caregivers remain inadequately addressed, leaving them financially burdened and unsupported. Ultimately, this study calls for a re-evaluation of societal attitudes toward caring, arguing for greater recognition of the economic contributions of family caregivers and the implementation of supportive policies. Long-duration energy storage is commonly viewed as a key technology for providing flexibility to the grid and broader energy systems over a multidecadal time frame. However, prior work has typically used present-day grid infrastructures to characterize the relationship between the duration and arbitrage value of storage in electricity markets. This study leverages established National Renewable Energy Laboratory grid planning and operations tools, analysis, and data to execute a price-taker model of an energy storage system for several 8760 h price series representative of current and future contiguous United States grid infrastructures with varying shares of variable renewable energy (VRE). We find that the total value of energy storage typically increases with VRE shares, but any increase in the relative value of longer storage durations over time depends on the region and grid mix. Some regions see incremental value increasing notably, up to 20–40 h in 2050, while others do not. The negative effect of lower roundtrip efficiency on value is also found to be scenario-dependent, with the energy value in higher VRE scenarios being less sensitive to roundtrip efficiency and more supportive of longer storage durations. Long-duration storage value and deployment potential are a function of evolving electricity sector infrastructure, markets, and policy, making it critical to consistently revisit potential long-duration storage contributions to the grid. In Europe, intensive agriculture threatens species-rich semi-natural communities that have emerged from traditional agricultural activities. To protect these communities, subsidies are given to farmers through agri-environmental schemes (AESs). However, after nearly twenty years in operation, the uniform support system for farmers has not produced the expected results. Therefore, we conducted 15 semi-structured, in-depth qualitative interviews with beef cattle farmers in Estonia and identified the socio-ecological aspects of their activities. We found that small-scale farmers cannot compete with intensive farmers in the meat market because many breeds with slower weight gain and smaller body weights are grazed in semi-natural grasslands. Although two food quality schemes have been created in Estonia to value extensively grown meat, the permanent agricultural grasslands are under-supported, and the family farmers managing these areas feel the unfair distribution of subsidies. Moreover, family farms cannot compete with large farms, as the availability of pastures on family farms limits the number of livestock, and European Union animal welfare requirements and extreme weather conditions in 2023 have limited the number of herds. Since AESs have a large impact on farmers, we recommend that they be more flexible and consider the socio-cultural background of farmers and their impact on local communities when defining support. With the development of new materials and the trend of miniaturization of smart devices, wearable devices are playing an increasingly important role in people’s lives and occupying a larger market share. Meanwhile, the operation of wearable devices is based on the flexible sensors inside them. Although the development of flexible sensors has been very rapid in the more than 20 years since entering the 21st century, facing the booming market and demand at present, the development of flexible sensors still faces many challenges such as more miniaturization, higher integration, greater sustainability, high precision, and more efficient energy saving. This paper aims to summarize the development of flexible sensors, look forward to the future development of such devices, and provide a reference for researchers. Full article

With the establishment of a competitive electricity retail market, how to optimize the retail electricity price mechanism has become the core of all kinds of retail companies to explore. Aiming at the pricing problem of time-of-use electricity price, this paper proposes a pricing strategy based on the master–slave game model. Firstly, considering the user’s electricity utility and satisfaction factors, the comprehensive benefit function of the electricity selling company with electricity price as the decision variable and the user’s comprehensive benefit function with electricity consumption as the decision variable are established, respectively. Then, a master–slave game model is established with the electricity selling company as the leader and the user as the follower, and the reverse induction method is used to solve the model. Finally, considering the influencing factors of user response ability, different electricity price types and user types are set up for simulation. The results show that the revenue of electricity retailers can be increased by up to 170,000 yuan, and the average electricity price of users can be reduced by up to 8 yuan. It is verified that the model can effectively achieve a win-win situation for both sides and promote peak shaving and valley filling. At the same time, it is proved that the role of the model is positively related to electricity price flexibility and user response capability. Full article

This study investigates the effect of Ethiopian economic liberalization policy and manufacturing firms’ international competitive priorities on the export performance after economic reforms in 1991. This study also aims to clarify how these economic reforms and the firm’s competitive priorities affect the international market export performance. This study further examines and identifies the most important variables that significantly affect export performance in relation to economic liberalization and the firm’s competitiveness. To achieve these objectives, both primary and secondary data were collected. A cross-sectional survey was conducted from 114 fully privatized manufacturing firms, utilizing a structured questionnaire with five Likert-scale items. The findings of this research indicate that law and order (LaO) and government intervention, incentive schemes, and trade openness have a significant relationship with the export performance of exporting firms in Ethiopia. This study also infers that firms must incorporate firm’s international competitive priorities’ cost, flexibility, and product quality as part of their competitive strategy. These competitive priority metrics limit export performance in terms of both subjective (e.g., export satisfaction) and quantitative (market share, profit) factors. This study concludes that economic liberalization and competitive priority measures are positive and have a significant relationship with the export performance of manufacturing firms in Ethiopia after 1991 reforms. The result also provides valuable insights for manufacturing firms and policymakers, highlighting the importance of economic liberalization in enhancing the export capabilities of privatized firms. These insights can guide the development of effective strategies to boost exports and foster sustainable economic growth. Full article

Flexible custom manufacturing is becoming increasingly important, and, in the near future, it will serve as a key method to counter growing competition and meet market demands across most industrial sectors. This situation necessitates the substantial reorganization of companies’ material and information flows, as traditional planning approaches focused on serial production and longer time horizons are gradually losing their effectiveness. An integrated digital twin system that unifies production and logistics planning is emerging as a promising solution. The proposed approach entails implementing a digital twin directly within custom manufacturing, enabling the continuous monitoring and real-time adjustment of production plans based on instant data from sensors and information systems. The system architecture is designed around multiple modules responsible for data collection and processing, scheduling, simulation, statistical analysis, and effective communication between the system and its users. By leveraging these components, the solution can flexibly adapt to any deviations or changes as they occur. Within the scope of this research, attention is devoted not only to the handling of dynamic and random data but also to the prioritization of individual orders. Equally emphasized is the role of intelligent communication tools, which promptly inform us about shifts in the production process and allow for rapid plan modifications to ensure the highest possible levels of efficiency and reliability. The 2050 global ambition for a carbon-neutral society is increasing the penetration of the most competitive variable renewable technologies, onshore wind and solar PV. These technologies are known for their near-zero marginal costs but highly variable time-dependent generation. Power systems with major penetrations of variable generation need high balancing flexibility to guarantee their stability by maintaining the equilibrium between demand and supply. Electricity markets were designed for dispatchable technologies. Support schemes are used to incentivize and de-risk the investment in variable renewables, since actual market designs are riskier for their active participation. This study presents three strategic bidding strategies for the active participation of variable renewables in electricity markets based on probabilistic quantile-based forecasts. This case study examines the levels of active market participation for a wind power producer (WPP) in the Iberian electricity market and the Portuguese balancing markets, where WPPs are financially responsible for imbalances and operate without support schemes in the first and second stages of the Iberian market designs. Results from this study indicate that the WPP has the potential to increase its market value between 36% and 155% if participating in the tertiary and secondary balancing markets completely adapted to its design, respectively. However, considering the use of strategic bidding in actual market designs, by participating in the secondary reserve, the WPP can increase its market value by 10% and 45% when compared with perfect foresight and operational cases, respectively. This paper systematically reviews carbon reduction pathways across generation, grid, load, and storage from the dual perspectives of technology and policy–market mechanisms. First, the review outlines a multi-tier integrated energy system architecture and evaluates crucial technologies, such as back-pressure modification, flexible direct current transmission, and virtual energy storage, in improving energy efficiency and carbon reduction. Second, it explores how policy–market mechanisms incentivize carbon reduction, focusing on green power, green certificates, and the carbon market to support integrated energy system transformation. New power systems, predominantly based on renewable energy, necessitate active load-side management to effectively alleviate the pressures associated with balancing supply-side fluctuations and demand-side energy requirements. Concurrently, as power markets continue to evolve, both the energy market and ancillary services market offer valuable guidance for the optimal economic dispatch of industrial loads. Although substantial energy-saving potential exists within industrial production processes, their inherent complexity, dynamic nature, and mixed continuous–discrete modal characteristics present significant challenges in achieving accurate and efficient demand-side response. Conversely, the ongoing advancement of industrial internet techniques lays a robust technical foundation for the reliable, stable, and economically efficient operation of new power systems with large-scale industrial load response. This paper starts from the industrial load, discusses the resources and advantages and disadvantages of the industry itself, and carefully distinguishes the advantages and disadvantages of participating in the power market to make decisions. This paper provides a comprehensive review of intelligent optimization and regulation of industrial load flexibility in response to new power systems. Firstly, it synthesizes the three prevalent demand response strategies (load shedding, load shifting, and load substitution), along with their associated regulatory techniques, considering the operational characteristics of various industrial sectors. It then examines the trading strategies and modeling challenges of flexible industrial loads within two power market environments: the energy market and the ancillary services market. Subsequently, using the non-ferrous industry electrolytic process as a case study, it explores the optimization of production process parameters under energy usage planning. Finally, from the perspectives of market, technical innovation, and stakeholder engagement, it highlights the unresolved issues and provides insights into future research directions concerning the intelligent, digital, and market-driven integration of flexible industrial load flexibility. Increasing supply chain uncertainty due to market volatility has heightened the need for more flexible procurement strategies. While procurement through long-term forward contracts provides supply stability and cost predictability, it limits adaptability. Option contracts offer procurement flexibility, but require additional upfront premiums. Meanwhile, the spot market enables real-time purchasing without prior commitments, enhancing flexibility but exposing buyers to price volatility. Despite the growing adoption of portfolio procurement—combining forward contracts, option contracts, and spot market purchases—the existing research primarily examines these channels in isolation or in limited combinations, lacking an integrated perspective. This study addresses this gap by developing a comprehensive procurement model that simultaneously optimizes procurement decisions across all three channels under uncertain demand and fluctuating spot prices. Unlike prior studies, which often analyze one or two procurement channels separately, our model presents a novel, holistic framework that balances cost efficiency, risk mitigation, and adaptability. Our findings demonstrate that incorporating the spot market significantly enhances procurement flexibility and profitability, particularly in environments with high demand uncertainty and price volatility. Additionally, sensitivity analysis reveals how fluctuations in spot prices and demand uncertainty influence optimal procurement decisions. By introducing a new, practical approach to portfolio procurement, this study provides managerial insights that help businesses navigate complex and uncertain supply chain environments more effectively. However, this study assumes unlimited spot market capacity and reliable suppliers, highlighting a limitation that future research should address. Full article

This study investigates the interrelationships between institutional frameworks, innovation ecosystems, and stakeholder coordination in enhancing the global competitiveness of Ethiopia’s Integrated Agro-Industrial Parks (IAIPs) in Yirgalem and Bulbula. A mixed-methods approach combining qualitative thematic analysis, Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), and SWOT analysis was employed to evaluate the influence of governance structures on innovation and competitiveness. Findings suggest that while strong institutional frameworks and effective stakeholder coordination foster innovation, a misalignment between the innovation ecosystem and global market demands limits competitiveness. Rigid institutional structures hinder IAIPs’ adaptability to market fluctuations. Future research should explore the role of digital transformation, such as digital agriculture tools and traceability systems, in enhancing competitiveness. Additionally, examining the influence of public–private partnerships and conducting longitudinal studies on adaptive governance’s effect on IAIP resilience could provide valuable insights for the development of Ethiopia’s agro-industrial sector. The study underscores the need for flexible, market-responsive frameworks and enhanced stakeholder engagement. Full article

A Cost-Optimizing Analysis of Energy Storage Technologies and Transmission Lines for Decarbonizing the UK Power System by 2035

The UK net zero strategy aims to fully decarbonize the power system by 2035, anticipating a 40–60% increase in demand due to the growing electrification of the transport and heating sectors over the next thirteen years. This paper provides a detailed technical and economic analysis of the role of energy storage technologies and transmission lines in balancing the power system amidst large shares of intermittent renewable energy generation. The analysis is conducted using the cost-optimizing energy system modelling framework REMix, developed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The obtained results of multiple optimization scenarios indicate that achieving the lowest system cost, with a 73% share of electricity generated by renewable energy sources, is feasible only if planning rules in England and Wales are flexible enough to allow the construction of 53 GW of onshore wind capacity. This flexibility would enable the UK to become a net electricity exporter, assuming an electricity trading market with neighbouring countries. Depending on the scenario, 2.4–11.8 TWh of energy storage supplies an average of 11% of the electricity feed-in, with underground hydrogen storage representing more than 80% of that total capacity. In terms of storage converter capacity, the optimal mix ranges from 32 to 34 GW of lithium-ion batteries, 13 to 22 GW of adiabatic compressed air energy storage, 4 to 24 GW of underground hydrogen storage, and 6 GW of pumped hydro. Decarbonizing the UK power system by 2035 is estimated to cost $37–56 billion USD, with energy storage accounting for 38% of the total system cost. Transmission lines supply 10–17% of the total electricity feed-in, demonstrating that, when coupled with energy storage, it is possible to reduce the installed capacity of conventional power plants by increasing the utilization of remote renewable generation assets and avoiding curtailment during peak generation times. Supply chain resilience (SRES) is essential for firms aiming to alleviate the impact of interruptions and maintain operational continuity and sustainability in performance. In the context of the FMCG industries of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, characterized by intricate and vulnerable supply chains, there exists an urgent necessity for solutions that bolster resilience. This study examines the influence of critical factors resilient suppliers (RS), transportation capacity (TC), flexibility (FLEX), network complexity (NC), and supply chain dynamism (SPD) on SRES. A quantitative methodology was utilized, examining survey data from 611 participants with Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA). The results indicate that RS and TC are essential for directly improving SRES, whereas FLEX and SPD facilitate increased adaptability and reactivity. The NCA emphasizes the need to control NC to avert bottlenecks that may impede resilience. This study indicates that SRES emerges from the dynamic interplay of several elements, rather than from separate enhancements. Although NC exerts a negligible direct influence, adeptly managing complexity is crucial for reducing disruptions and inefficiencies. The results underscore that fortifying RS, TC, and FLEX in unison improves resilience and adaptation to market volatility and disturbances. This study provides various theoretical and managerial insights. A systems theory approach highlights the interdependence of supply chain components, whereas the Theory of Constraints (TOC) posits that excessive NC can hinder resilience. Management should concentrate on maximizing RS and TC until declining returns are evident, thereafter redirecting efforts towards improving FLEX and minimizing NC. Furthermore, optimizing processes and facilitating swift decision-making are essential for maintaining resilience. Full article

Collaborative robots are rapidly gaining popularity and will occupy 33% of the industrial robot market by 2030 due to their ability to adapt to dynamic environments where traditional automation approaches lack flexibility. Available solutions in the market are characterized by the generality of the pod without considering the specifics of a particular collaborative workplace. This feature creates barriers to developing human–robot interaction (HRI) interfaces. The proposed study developed a Collaborative Robotics Assistant (CobRA) system to address these challenges. Considering the workplace’s peculiarities, this intelligent HRI system provides seamless programming for collaborative robots right in the workplace. CobRA combines machine vision and convolutional neural networks to detect objects in real-time using a depth-sensing camera and uses a projector to visualize the control interface interactively. The system supports high-level commands such as object manipulation and placement by automating programming. The solution was tested in a SmartTechLab and program environment where it demonstrated significant efficiency gains, reducing errors and programming time compared to traditional methods. This development opens new perspectives for improving the safety and efficiency of human–robot interaction in dynamic industrial environments. Full article
