Background: Basketball is a high-intensity, multidirectional sport involving frequent jumping, sprinting, and rapid changes of direction, which may expose the musculoskeletal system to varying and potentially asymmetric mechanical demands. The mechanical loading associated with basketball-specific movements may also serve as a consistent osteogenic stimulus, potentially leading to side-specific adaptations in body composition and bone characteristics. Long-term participation in basketball may lead to functional and structural asymmetries between the lower and upper limbs, potentially increasing the risk of injury and impacting performance. This study aimed to investigate structural and functional asymmetries in male basketball players using body composition, health, and performance-related measures. Methods: Thirty-eight right-handed basketball players (age: 21.1 ± 2.8 years; body mass: 86.2 ± 9.2 kg; height: 1.91 ± 8.3 cm) were assessed in a single testing session. The evaluation included bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), single-leg countermovement rebound jumps (CMRJs), and handgrip strength testing. Results: Significant interlimb differences were observed in lean mass and the phase angle for both the arms and legs. Performance differences favored the left leg in terms of maximum jump height (12.0 ± 17.5%, p = 0.001) and reactive strength index (RSI), whereas the right arm exhibited greater grip strength than the left (6.4 ± 5.9%, p = 0.001). DXA analysis revealed significant asymmetries in bone parameters, including bone mineral density (BMD) of the trochanter (1.81 ± 5.51%, p = 0.031, dz = 0.37), total hip (1.41 ± 4.11%, p = 0.033, dz = 0.36), and total arms (–1.21 ± 2.71%, p = 0.010, dz = 0.43), as well as bone mineral content (BMC) in total arms (–2.16 ± 5.09%, p = 0.012) and total legs (1.71 ± 3.36%, p = 0.002, 0.54). Conclusions: These findings suggest that basketball may induce both functional and structural adaptations, likely due to repetitive unilateral loading and sport-specific movement patterns. However, individual variability and the use of diverse assessment methods may complicate the detection and interpretation of asymmetries. Coaches and practitioners should monitor and address such asymmetries to reduce injury risk and optimize performance. Full article

Large-area membrane spacecraft, such as solar sails, must be tightly stowed before launch. However, excessive folding readily induces plastic creases that impede full on-orbit deployment and degrade membrane surface accuracy. To overcome this challenge, this study aims to quantify the mechanical response of Kapton films during folding and to establish a reliable welding process for post-fold sail membranes. Based on the theory of linear elastic engineering, an S-shaped folding model was theoretically simplified to obtain the relationship between the rebound force P of adjacent contact thin films and the thin-film spacing h. Then, the Kapton film folding process was numerically simulated based on the implicit static method by using ABAQUS. The stress–strain curves and mechanical parameters of the thin films measured through uniaxial tensile tests are applied to theoretical and numerical results. It is found that the P-h curves obtained by the theoretical, numerical, and experimental method have good consistency. Step-loaded creep tests show that, after 6 h, the mean spacing reductions Δh are 0.43 mm for 50 µm thin films and 1.05 mm for 125 µm thin films, matching simulation results within 3%. Finally, uniaxial tensile tests are conducted on the welded thin films to measure the strength of the thin-film welds under different welding temperatures and pressures. The tensile force and elongation required to eliminate weld wrinkles are also measured to explore the welding connection of Kapton film. Further, for 50 µm thin films with a 10 mm weld width, eliminating welding-induced wrinkles requires a tensile force of 9.61 N and an elongation of 0.43%. Full article

In response to issues of long construction cycles, high pollution, and labor shortages in traditional cast in situ subway station construction, a refined 3D model of a large-segment prefabricated subway station was established using ABAQUS software 2024, with mechanical behavior throughout the construction process studied based on the Shenzhen Huaxia Station project case. The model incorporates a concrete inelastic damage constitutive model and a steel elastic–plastic model, accurately simulates key components, including dry joints of mortise–tenon grooves, prestressed reinforcement, and bolted connections, and implements a seven-phase construction sequence. Research findings indicate the following: (1) During component assembly, the roof vault settlement remains ≤3.8 mm, but backfilling significantly increases displacements (roof settlement reaches 45 mm, middle slab deflection measures 66.91 mm). (2) Longitudinal mortise–tenon joints develop stress concentrations due to stiffness disparities, with mid-column installation slots identified as vulnerable zones exhibiting maximum Von Mises stress of 32 MPa. (3) Mid-column eccentricity induces structural asymmetry, causing increased deflection in longer-span middle slabs, corbel contact stress differentials up to 6 MPa, and bolt tensile stresses exceeding 1.1 GPa. (4) The arched roof effectively transfers loads via three-hinged arch mechanisms, though spandrel horizontal displacement triggers 5 cm rebound in diaphragm wall displacement. Conclusions confirm overall the stability of the prefabricated structure while recommending the optimization of member stiffness matching, avoidance of asymmetric designs, and localized reinforcement for mortise–tenon edges and mid-column joints. Results provide valuable references for analogous projects. Full article

Electric vehicles (EVs) and thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) are key demand-side resources for load regulation in modern power systems. However, effective load regulation faces significant challenges due to the stochastic nature of EV travel times and environmental uncertainties, such as temperature and solar irradiation fluctuations affecting TCL performance. Additionally, load rebound effects, caused by TCLs increasing power consumption to restore preset indoor temperatures after regulation, may induce secondary demand peaks, thereby offsetting regulation benefits. To address these challenges, this study aims to meet regulation requirements under such uncertainties while mitigating rebound-induced peaks. A rolling-horizon co-optimization method for EV and TCL clusters is proposed, which explicitly considers both uncertainties, load rebound effects and economic losses. First, to address the limited regulation capacity of individual EVs and TCLs, a user clustering mechanism is developed based on willingness to participate in demand response across multiple time intervals. A load rebound evaluation model for TCL clusters is developed to characterize post-regulation load variations and assess the rebound intensity. Subsequently, a load rebound-aware co-optimization model is proposed and solved within a rolling-horizon optimization approach, which performs rolling optimization within each prediction horizon to determine the participating clusters and their regulation capacities for each execution time slot under uncertainties. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method, compared with conventional day-ahead and robust optimization, not only meets load regulation requirements under uncertainty, but also effectively mitigates rebound-induced secondary peaks while achieving economic benefits. Cylindrical gears are used extensively due to their significant advantages including high efficiency, high load-bearing capacity, and long lifespan. However, the machining accuracy of cylindrical gears is significantly affected by motion errors and force-induced errors of machine tools. In this study, a motion error model of the machine tools was established based on multi-body system theory and homogeneous coordinate transformation method, quantifying the contributions and variation patterns of 12 key errors in the A and B-axes to workpiece geometric errors. Then, by using the stiffness analytical model and the spatial meshing theory, the influence of the force-induced elastic deformation of the shaft of rolling wheel and the springback of the workpiece tooth flank on the geometric error was revealed. Finally, taking the through rolling of a spur cylindrical gear with a module of 1.75 mm, a pressure angle of 20°, and 46 teeth as an example, the force-induced elastic deformation model of the shaft was verified by the rolling tests. Results show that for 40CrNiMo steel, the total profile deviation, total helix deviation, and single pitch deviation in the X-direction caused by rolling forces are 32.48 μm, 32.13 μm, and 32.13 μm, respectively, with a maximum contact rebound is δc = 28.27 μm. The relative error between theoretical and measured X-direction spindle deformation is 8.26%. This study provides theoretical foundation and experimental support for improving the precision of rolling process. Full article

This study investigates the influence of hybrid filler systems comprising carbon black (CB), mica, and surface-modified mica (SM) on the properties of ethylene–propylene–diene monomer (EPDM)/butadiene rubber (PB) composites. To reduce the environmental issues associated with CB, mica was incorporated as a partial substitute, and its compatibility with the rubber matrix was enhanced through surface modification using ureidopropyltrimethoxysilane (URE). The composites with hybrid filler systems and surface modification were evaluated in terms of curing behavior, crosslink density, mechanical and elastic properties, and dynamic viscoelasticity. Rheological analysis revealed that high mica loadings delayed vulcanization due to reduced thermal conductivity and accelerator adsorption, whereas SM composites maintained comparable curing performance. Swelling tests showed a reduction in crosslink density with increased unmodified mica content, while SM-filled samples improved the network density, confirming enhanced interfacial interaction. Mechanical testing demonstrated that the rubber compounds containing SM exhibited average improvements of 17% in tensile strength and 20% in toughness. In particular, the CB20/SM10 formulation achieved a well-balanced enhancement in tensile strength, elongation at break, and toughness, surpassing the performance of the CB-only system. Furthermore, rebound resilience and Tan δ analyses showed that low SM content reduced energy dissipation and improved elasticity, whereas excessive filler loadings led to increased hysteresis. The compression set results supported the thermal stability and recovery capacity of the SM-containing systems. Overall, the results demonstrated that the hybrid filler system incorporating URE-modified mica significantly enhanced filler dispersion and rubber–filler interaction, offering a sustainable and high-performance solution for elastomer composite applications. With sub-millimeter deformation capture capability, InSAR technology has become an important tool for surface deformation monitoring. However, it is still limited by interferences like land subsidence and bridge deformation in long-term linear engineering monitoring, failing to accurately identify track deformation. Based on RadarSAT-2 and Sentinel-1A satellite data from 2013 to 2023, this study uses time-series InSAR technology (PS-InSAR) to accurately invert the track deformation information of the Beijing–Tianjin Intercity Railway (Beijing section) in the past decade. Key findings demonstrate (1) rigorous groundwater policies (extraction bans and artificial recharge) drove up to 48% regional subsidence mitigation in Chaoyang–Tongzhou, with synchronous track deformation exhibiting 0.6‰ spatial gradient; (2) critical differential subsidence identified at DK11–DK23, where maximum annual settlement decreased from 110 to 49.7 mm; (3) XGBoost-SHAP modeling revealed dynamic driver shifts: confined aquifer depletion dominated in 2015 (>60%), transitioned to delayed consolidation in 2018 (45%), and culminated in phreatic recovery–compressible layer coupling by 2022 (55%). External factors (tectonic/urban loads) played secondary roles. The rise in groundwater levels induces soil dilatancy, while the residual deformation in cohesive soils—exhibiting hysteresis relative to groundwater fluctuations—manifests as surface subsidence deceleration rather than rebound. This study provides a scientific basis for in-depth understanding of the differential subsidence mechanism along high-speed railways and disaster prevention and control. Full article

The Kuroshio Current’s flow velocity imposes exacting requirements on underwater vehicle propulsive systems. Ecological preservation necessitates low-noise propeller designs to mitigate operational disturbances. As technological evolution advances toward greater intelligence and system integration, intelligent unmanned systems are positioning themselves as a critical frontier in marine innovation. In recent years, the global research community has increased its efforts towards the development of high-maneuverability underwater vehicles. However, propeller design optimization ignores the key balance between acoustic performance and hydrodynamic efficiency, as well as the appropriate speed threshold for blade rotation. In order to solve this problem, the propeller design of the NACA 65A010 airfoil is optimized by using OpenProp v3.3.4 and XFlow 2022 software, aiming at innovating the propulsion system of shallow water agile submersibles. The study presents an integrated design framework combining lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) simulations synergized with fully Lagrangian-LES modeling, implementing rotational speed thresholds to detect cavitation inception, followed by advanced acoustic propagation analysis. Through rigorous comparative assessment of hydrodynamic metrics, we establish an optimization protocol for propeller selection tailored to littoral zone operational demands. Studies have shown that increasing the number of propeller blades can reduce the single-blade load and delay cavitation, but too many blades will aggravate the complexity of the flow field, resulting in reduced efficiency and noise rebound. It is concluded that the propeller with five blades, a diameter of 234 mm, and a speed of 500 RPM exhibits the best performance. Under these conditions, the water efficiency is 69.01%, and the noise is the lowest, which basically realizes the balance between hydrodynamic efficiency and acoustic performance. This paradigm-shifting research carries substantial implications for next-generation marine vehicles, particularly in optimizing operational stealth and energy efficiency through intelligent propulsion architecture. Slab-replacement operations are crucial for restoring deteriorated CRTS I slab ballastless tracks to operational standards. This study investigates the structural implications of the operation by evaluating the strength characteristics and material properties of track components both prior to and following replacement. Apparent strength was measured using rebound hammer tests on three categories of slabs: retained, deteriorated, and newly installed track slabs. In addition, samples of old and new filling resins were collected and tested to determine their elastic moduli. These empirical data were subsequently used to develop a refined finite-element model that captures both pre- and post-replacement conditions. Under varying temperature loads, disparities in component performance were found to significantly affect stress distribution. Specifically, before replacement, deteriorated track slabs exhibited 10.74% lower strength compared to adjacent retained slabs, whereas, after replacement, new slabs showed a 25.26% increase in strength over retained ones. The elastic modulus of old filling resin was measured at 5.19 kN/mm, 35.13% below the minimum design requirement, while the new resin reached 10.48 kN/mm, exceeding the minimum by 31.00%. Although the slab-replacement operation enhances safety by addressing structural deficiencies, it may also create new weak points in adjacent areas, where insufficient stiffness results in stress concentrations and potential damage. This study offers critical insights for optimizing maintenance strategies and improving the long-term performance of ballastless track systems. Full article

Modern utilities face unprecedented pressures as trends in digital transformation and democratized energy choice empower consumers to engage in peak shaving, flexible load management, and adopt grid automation and intelligence solutions. A powerful confluence of architectural, technological, and socio-economic forces is transforming the U.S. electricity market, triggering significant changes in electricity production, transmission, and consumption. Utilities are embracing digital twins and repurposed Utility 2.0 concepts—distributed energy resources, microgrids, innovative electricity market designs, real-time automated monitoring, smart meters, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and advanced data and predictive analytics—to foster operational flexibility and market efficiency. This analysis qualitatively evaluates how digitalization, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs), and adaptive strategies to mitigate rebound effects collectively advance smart duck curve management. By leveraging digital platforms for real-time monitoring and predictive analytics, utilities can optimize energy flows and make data-driven decisions. BESS technologies capture surplus renewable energy during off-peak periods and discharge it when demand spikes, thereby smoothing grid fluctuations. This review explores the benefits of targeted digital transformation, BESSs, and managed rebound effects in mitigating the duck curve problem, ensuring that energy efficiency gains translate into actual savings. Continuous SiC fiber-reinforced SiC matrix composites (SiC/SiC), as structural heat protection integrated materials, are often used in parts for large-area heat protection and sharp leading edges, and there are a variety of low-velocity impact events in their service. In this paper, a drop hammer impact test was conducted using narrow strip samples to simulate the low-velocity impact damage process of sharp-edged components. During the test, different impact energies and impact times were set to focus on investigating the low-velocity impact damage characteristics of 2.5D SiC/SiC composites. To further analyze the damage mechanism, computed tomography (CT) was used to observe the crack propagation paths and distribution states of the composites before and after impact, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to characterize the differences in the micro-morphology of their fracture surfaces. The results show that the in-plane impact behavior of a 2.5D needled SiC/SiC composite strip samples differs from the conventional three-stage pattern. In addition to the three stages observed in the energy–time curve—namely in the quasi-linear elastic region, the severe load drop region, and the rebound stage after peak impact energy—a plateau stage appears when the impact energy is 1 J. During the impact process, interlayer load transfer is achieved through the connection of needled fibers, which continuously provide significant structural support, with obvious fiber pull-out and debonding phenomena. When the samples are subjected to two impacts, damage accumulation occurs inside the material. Under conditions with the same total energy, multiple impacts cause more severe damage to the material compared to a single impact. Full article

This study conducted uniaxial creep tests on coal samples under both natural and water-saturated conditions for durations of about 180 days per sample to study the stability of coal pillar dams of the Daliuta Coal Mine underground reservoir. Combined with synchronized acoustic emission (AE) monitoring, the research systematically revealed the time-dependent deformation mechanisms and damage evolution laws of coal under prolonged water immersion and natural conditions. The results indicate that water-immersed coal exhibits a unique negative creep phenomenon at the initial stage, with the strain rate down to −0.00086%/d, attributed to non-uniform pore compaction and elastic rebound effects. During the steady-state creep phase, the creep rates under water-immersed and natural conditions were comparable. However, water immersion led to an 11.4% attenuation in elastic modulus, decreasing from 2300 MPa to 2037 MPa. Water immersion would also suppress AE activity, leading to the average daily AE events of 128, which is only 25% of that under natural conditions. In the accelerating creep stage, the AE event rate surged abruptly, validating its potential as an early warning indicator for coal pillar instability. Based on the identified long-term strength of the coal sample, it is recommended to maintain operational loads below the threshold of 9 MPa. This research provides crucial theoretical foundations and experimental data for optimizing the design and safety monitoring of coal pillar dams in CMURs. Full article

Traditional damage detection methods of prestressed concrete box girder bridges have low efficiency and cannot quantify the structure’s internal damage. We used an inversion method and a falling weight deflectometer to estimate the mechanical parameters of prestressed box girder bridges. A finite element model of the bridge dynamics under impact loading was established. A perturbation-based update was conducted, and a multi-parameter inversion algorithm was constructed. The measured data were used for the efficient identification of the bridge’s elasticity modulus and the prestressing tensile force. The theoretical validation indicated a high modeling accuracy and inversion efficiency, with a convergence accuracy within 1%. The initial value had a minimal influence on the inversion results. The engineering application showed that the maximum error of the elastic modulus between the inversion and the rebound methods was 1.55%. The loss rates of the deck slab’s elastic modulus and the prestressing force obtained from the inversion were 4.39% and 7.64%, respectively. The proposed method provides a new strategy for evaluating damage to prestressed box girder bridges. Full article

This study explores the flame retardancy and structural behavior of silicone foam composites filled with halogen-free flame retardants, aiming to evaluate their feasibility for use in mass transportation applications. Silicone foam specimens incorporating magnesium hydroxide and expandable graphite were prepared and compared with unfilled silicone foam under both static and dynamic loading conditions. Uniaxial compression and simple shear tests were conducted to assess mechanical behavior, and a second-order Ogden model was employed to represent hyperelasticity in the finite element analysis. Fire performance was evaluated using cone calorimeter tests in accordance with ISO 5660-1. The results showed a 53.6% reduction in peak heat release rate (PHRR) and a 48.1% decrease in MARHE upon the addition of flame retardants, satisfying relevant fire safety standards. Although the addition of fillers increased the compressive stiffness and reduced rebound resilience, static comfort indices remained within acceptable ranges. These findings confirm that halogen-free filled silicone foams exhibit significantly enhanced fire retardancy while maintaining sufficient mechanical integrity and seating comfort, demonstrating their potential as eco-friendly alternatives to conventional polyurethane foams in large-scale transportation applications. This study aims to mitigate slope-collapse hazards that threaten life and property at the Lujiawan resettlement site in Wanbi Town, Dayao County, Yunnan Province, within the Guanyinyan hydropower reservoir. It integrates centimeter-level point-cloud data collected by a DJI Matrice 350 RTK equipped with a Zenmuse L2 airborne LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) sensor with detailed structural-joint survey data. First, qualitative structural interpretation is conducted with stereographic projection. Next, safety factors are quantified using the limit-equilibrium method, establishing a dual qualitative–quantitative diagnostic framework. This framework delineates six hazardous rock zones (WY1–WY6), dominated by toppling and free-fall failure modes, and evaluates their stability under combined rainfall infiltration, seismic loading, and ambient conditions. Subsequently, six-degree-of-freedom Monte Carlo simulations incorporating realistic three-dimensional terrain and block geometry are performed in RAMMS::ROCKFALL (Rapid Mass Movements Simulation—Rockfall). The resulting spatial patterns of rockfall velocity, kinetic energy, and rebound height elucidate their evolution coupled with slope height, surface morphology, and block shape. Results show peak velocities ranging from 20 to 42 m s−1 and maximum kinetic energies between 0.16 and 1.4 MJ. Most rockfall trajectories terminate within 0–80 m of the cliff base. All six identified hazardous rock masses pose varying levels of threat to residential structures at the slope foot, highlighting substantial spatial variability in hazard distribution. Drawing on the preceding diagnostic results and dynamic simulations, we recommend a three-tier “zonal defense with in situ energy dissipation” scheme: (i) install 500–2000 kJ flexible barriers along the crest and upper slope to rapidly attenuate rockfall energy; (ii) place guiding or deflection structures at mid-slope to steer blocks and dissipate momentum; and (iii) deploy high-capacity flexible nets combined with a catchment basin at the slope foot to intercept residual blocks. This staged arrangement maximizes energy attenuation and overall risk reduction. This study shows that integrating high-resolution 3D point clouds with rigid-body contact dynamics overcomes the spatial discontinuities of conventional surveys. The approach substantially improves the accuracy and efficiency of hazardous rock stability assessments and rockfall trajectory predictions, offering a quantifiable, reproducible mitigation framework for long slopes, large rock volumes, and densely fractured cliff faces.
