The United States produces approximately 500 million tons of asphalt mixtures annually, while generating vast amounts of waste materials that could be repurposed for sustainable infrastructure. Each year, 1.4 billion gallons of lubricating oils are available for reuse and recycling. Additionally, 280 million tires are discarded, contributing to significant environmental challenges. Given the critical role of the roadway network in economic growth, mobility, and infrastructure sustainability, there is a pressing need for innovative material solutions that integrate recycled materials without compromising performance. This study introduces a Rubberized-Aerogel Composite (RaC), a novel asphalt binder modifier combining crumb rubber, recycled oil, and a silica-based aerogel to enhance the sustainability and durability of asphalt pavements. The research methodology involved blending the RaC with the PG70-10 asphalt binder at a 5:1 ratio and conducting comprehensive laboratory tests on binders and mixtures, including rheology, thermal conductivity (TC), specific heat capacity (Cp), the Hamburg Wheel-Tracking Test (HWTT), and indirect tensile strength (IDT). Pavement performance was simulated using AASHTOWare Pavement ME under hot and cold climates with thin and thick pavement structures. Results showed that RaC-modified binders reduced thermal conductivity by up to 30% and increased specific heat capacity by 15%, improving thermal stability. RaC mixtures exhibited a 50% reduction in rut depth in the HWTT and lower thermal expansion/contraction coefficients. Pavement ME simulations predicted up to 40% less permanent deformation and 60% reduced thermal cracking for RaC mixtures compared to the controls. RaC enhances pavement lifespan, reduces maintenance costs, and promotes environmental sustainability by repurposing waste materials, offering a scalable solution for resilient infrastructure. To reduce reflective cracking in asphalt pavements, gravel base layers are commonly employed to disperse stress and delay structural damage. However, the loose nature of gravel bases results in complex interlayer contact conditions, typically involving interlocking between gravel particles in the base and aggregates in the asphalt surface course. In order to accurately simulate this interaction and to improve the interlayer shear performance, a mesoscale finite element model was developed and combined with macroscopic tests. Effects due to the type and amount of binder material, type of asphalt surface layer, and external loading on shear strength were systematically analyzed. The results indicate that SBS (Styrene–Butadiene–Styrene)-modified asphalt provides the highest interlayer strength, followed by SBR (Styrene–Butadiene Rubber)-modified emulsified asphalt and unmodified base bitumen. SBS (Styrene–Butadiene–Styrene)-modified asphalt achieves optimal interlaminar shear strength at a coating rate of 0.9 L/m2. Additionally, shear strength increases with applied load but decreases with increasing void ratio and the nominal maximum aggregate size of the surface course in the analyzed spectra. Based on simulation and experimental data, an equivalent macro–meso predictive model relating shear strength to key influencing factors was established. This model effectively bridges mesoscale mechanisms and practical engineering applications, providing theoretical support for the design and performance optimization of asphalt pavements with gravel bases. The interlayer bonding strength between a cement-stabilized macadam (CSM) base and an asphalt surface layer significantly influences asphalt pavement performance. This study analyzes the calculation method for the interlayer bonding coefficient, investigates its impact on pavement structural response, and proposes a threshold value. Pavement mechanics software was first employed to analyze horizontal displacement at the CSM-asphalt interface, leading to a proposed method for calculating the bonding coefficient using initial stress and displacement derived from interlayer shear tests. Subsequently, the bonding coefficient was evaluated under three interface conditions: untreated, emulsified asphalt-treated, and SBS-modified hot asphalt-treated. Results reveal substantial inherent bonding strength even in untreated interfaces. SBS-modified hot asphalt increased bonding strength by 40–50% compared to untreated interfaces and by 15–20% relative to emulsified asphalt-treated interfaces. Analysis of varying bonding coefficients demonstrates that insufficient CSM-asphalt bonding readily induces asphalt layer fatigue cracking, with bonding strength exerting the dominant influence on fatigue life. Pavements with SBS-modified hot asphalt interlayers exhibited approximately 70% longer fatigue life than untreated interfaces and 30% longer than emulsified asphalt-treated interfaces. Crucially, an interlayer bonding coefficient exceeding 5000 MPa/cm is required for layers to be considered fully bonded. Full article

Green spaces are essential for urban environments, but urban expansion often results in fragmented patches and narrow pavements unsuitable for tree growth. Consequently, there is a pressing need for alternative vegetation in urban landscapes where tree planting is impractical. Urban spontaneous vegetation (USV)—plants that establish naturally without cultivation—shows promise for urban landscaping, and yet has been underexplored in urban ecology. This study was the first systematic survey to examine the composition of USV in Chiang Mai, Thailand, across seven urban locations. The survey was conducted along 13 sidewalk routes (totaling 33.24 km), documenting all non-tree vascular plant species. A total of 63 USV species from 24 families were recorded, predominantly colonizing pavement gaps, cracks, and curbside cracks. The most diverse family was Poaceae, with 15 species. Among the 61 identified species, 32 species (52%) were non-native. Seven species were found in all surveyed locations, highlighting their adaptability to challenging urban conditions. Fifty USV species are medicinal plants. Many species exhibit characteristics that are ideal for sustainable landscaping, such as drought tolerance, low maintenance requirements, and ornamental value. This study highlights USV as a key component of green infrastructure and provides new insights for urban sustainable landscaping. Full article

Several variables influence the performance of hot asphalt mixtures including reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). Among these, the virgin bitumen’s origin, the mix production temperature and the time the mix is kept at a high temperature between mixing and compaction play a fundamental role but are often neglected. This study aimed to quantify the negative effects associated with the improper choice of these variables. Therefore, their influence on the mechanical (indirect tensile stiffness modulus and strength, Cracking Tolerance Index) and chemical (Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectroscopy) characteristics of asphalt mixtures containing 50% RA were investigated. In particular, two rejuvenators, two types of virgin bitumen (visbreaker and straight-run), two production temperatures (140 °C and 170 °C) and three conditioning times in the oven (30 min, 90 min and 180 min) were analyzed. The results showed interesting findings that allow us to recommend selecting the virgin bitumen type carefully and to avoid excessively stressing the binder during the production of the mix. Rapid pavement repair demands materials that combine accelerated strength gains, dimensional stability, long-term durability, and sustainability. However, finding materials or formulations that offer these balances remains a critical challenge. This study systematically evaluates two polymer-modified belitic calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) concretes—CSAP (powdered polymer) and CSA-LLP (liquid polymer admixture)—against a traditional Type III Portland cement (OPC) control under both laboratory and realistic outdoor conditions. Laboratory specimens were tested for fresh properties, early-age and later-age compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strengths, as well as drying shrinkage according to ASTM standards. Outdoor 5 × 4 × 12-inch slabs mimicking typical jointed plain concrete panels (JPCPs), instrumented with vibrating wire strain gauges and thermocouples, recorded the strain and temperature at 5 min intervals over 16 weeks, with 24 h wet-burlap curing to replicate field practices. Laboratory findings show that CSA mixes exceeded 3200 psi of compressive strength at 4 h, but cold outdoor casting (~48 °F) delayed the early-age strength development. The CSA-LLP exhibited the lowest drying shrinkage (0.036% at 16 weeks), and outdoor CSA slabs captured the initial ettringite-driven expansion, resulting in a net expansion (+200 µε) rather than contraction. Approximately 80% of the total strain evolved within the first 48 h, driven by autogenous and plastic effects. CSA mixes generated lower peak internal temperatures and reduced thermal strain amplitudes compared to the OPC, improving dimensional stability and mitigating restraint-induced cracking. These results underscore the necessity of field validation for shrinkage compensation mechanisms and highlight the critical roles of the polymer type and curing protocol in optimizing CSA-based repairs for durable, low-carbon pavement rehabilitation. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the environmentally friendly management and reutilization of electronic waste (e-waste) plastics in flexible pavement construction. The discussion begins with an overview of e-waste management challenges and outlines key recycling approaches for converting plastic waste into asphalt-compatible materials. This review then discusses the types of e-waste plastics used for asphalt modification, their incorporation methods, and compatibility challenges. Physical and chemical treatment techniques, including the use of free radical initiators, are then explored for improving dispersion and performance. Additionally, in situations where advanced pretreatment methods are not applicable due to cost, safety, or technical constraints, the application of alternative approaches, such as the use of low-cost complementary additives, is discussed as a practical solution to enhance compatibility and performance. Finally, the influence of e-waste plastics on the conventional and rheological properties of asphalt binders, as well as the performance of asphalt mixtures, is also evaluated. Findings indicate that e-waste plastics, when combined with appropriate pretreatment methods and complementary additives, can enhance workability, cold-weather cracking resistance, high-temperature anti-rutting performance, and resistance against moisture-induced damage while also offering environmental and economic benefits. This review highlights the potential of e-waste plastics as sustainable asphalt modifiers and provides insights across the full utilization pathway, from recovery to in-field performance. This paper presents a critical and comprehensive review of the application of mining waste, specifically waste rock and tailings, in asphalt pavements, with the aim of synthesizing performance outcomes and identifying key research gaps. A systematic literature search yielded a final dataset of 41 peer-reviewed articles for detailed analysis. Bibliometric analysis indicates a notable upward trend in annual publications, reflecting growing academic and practical interest in this field. Performance-based evaluations demonstrate that mining wastes, particularly iron and copper tailings, have the potential to enhance the high-temperature performance (i.e., rutting resistance) of asphalt binders and mixtures when utilized as fillers or aggregates. However, their effects on fatigue life, low-temperature cracking, and moisture susceptibility are inconsistent, largely influenced by the physicochemical properties and dosage of the specific waste material. Despite promising results, critical knowledge gaps remain, particularly in relation to long-term durability, comprehensive environmental and economic Life-Cycle Assessments (LCA), and the inherent variability of waste materials. This review underscores the substantial potential of mining wastes as sustainable alternatives to conventional pavement materials, while emphasizing the need for further multidisciplinary research to support their broader implementation. Limited recovery of the viscoelastic properties of aged asphalt on RAP surfaces at ambient temperature reduces interface fusion and bonding with new emulsified asphalt, degrading pavement performance and limiting large-scale promotion and high-value applications of the emulsified asphalt cold recycled mixture (EACRM). Therefore, a cold regenerant was independently prepared to rapidly penetrate, soften, and activate aged asphalt at ambient temperature in this paper, and its effects on the volumetric composition, mechanical strength, and pavement performance of EACRM were systematically investigated. The results showed that as the cold regenerant content increased, the air voids, indirect tensile strength (ITS), and high-temperature deformation resistance of EACRM decreased, while the dry–wet ITS ratio, cracking resistance, and fatigue resistance increased. Considering the comprehensive pavement performance requirements of cold recycled pavements, the optimal content of the activated cold regenerant for EACRM was determined to be approximately 0.6%. Quality requirements for mineral aggregate for concrete used to construct pavement for busy highways are high because of the fatigue traffic loads and environmental exposure. The use of local aggregate for infrastructure projects could result in important sustainability improvements, provided that the concrete’s durability is assured. The objective of this study was to identify the potential alkaline reactivity of local greywacke aggregate and select appropriate mitigation measures against the alkali–silica reaction. Experimental tests on concrete specimens were performed using the miniature concrete prism test at 60 °C. Mixtures of coarse greywacke aggregate up to 12.5 mm with natural fine aggregate of different potential reactivity were evaluated in respect to the expansion, compressive strength, and elastic modulus of the concrete. Two preventive measures were studied—the use of metakaolin and slag-blended cement. A moderate reactivity potential of the greywacke aggregate was found, and the influence of reactive quartz sand on the expansion and instability of the mechanical properties of concrete was evaluated. Both crystalline and amorphous alkali–silica reaction products were detected in the cracks of the greywacke aggregate. Efficient expansion mitigation was obtained for the replacement of 15% of Portland cement by metakaolin or the use of CEM III/A cement with the slag content of 52%, even if greywacke aggregate was blended with moderately reactive quartz sand. It resulted in a relative reduction in expansion by 85–96%. The elastic modulus deterioration was less than 10%, confirming an increased stability of the elastic properties of concrete. Full article

Conventional asphalt is prone to cracking in cold climates due to its poor flexibility and limited ability to regulate temperature. This study investigates the use of low-temperature microencapsulated phase-change materials (MPCMs) to improve both the thermal storage and low-temperature performance of asphalt. MPCMs were incorporated into asphalt through physical blending at various concentrations. The physical, thermal, and rheological properties of the asphalt were then systematically evaluated. Tests included penetration, softening point, ductility, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). The addition of MPCMs increased penetration and ductility. It slightly reduced the softening point and viscosity. These changes suggest improved flexibility and workability at low temperatures. Rheological tests showed reductions in rutting and fatigue factors. This indicates better resistance to thermal and mechanical stresses. Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) results further confirmed that MPCMs lowered creep stiffness and increased the m-value. These findings demonstrate improved crack resistance under cold conditions. Thermal cycling tests also showed that MPCMs delayed the cooling process and reduced temperature fluctuations. This highlights their potential to enhance both energy efficiency and the durability of asphalt pavements in cold regions. Full article

Asphalt pavement cracking is an important factor affecting its service life. Under certain conditions, the self-healing behavior of asphalt itself can repair pavement cracks. However, the self-healing ability of asphalt itself is limited. In order to strengthen the self-healing ability of asphalt, the microcapsule wrapped with a repair agent is pre-mixed into the asphalt mixture. When the crack occurs and spreads to the surface of the microcapsule, the microcapsule ruptures and the healing agent flows out to realize the self-healing of the crack. Current microcapsules are mostly prepared with healing agents and bio-oil as core materials, and their high-temperature resistance to rutting is poor. While the epoxy resin contains a three-membered cyclic ether, it can undergo ring-opening polymerization to bond and repair the asphalt matrix. In addition, research on microcapsules mainly focuses on the self-healing properties of microcapsule-modified asphalt. In fact, before adding microcapsules to asphalt to improve its self-healing performance, it is necessary to ensure that the asphalt has a good road performance. On this basis, the self-healing performance of asphalt is improved, thereby extending the service life of asphalt pavement. Therefore, two-component epoxy self-healing microcapsules (E-mic and G-mic) were first prepared in this paper. Then, a temperature scanning test, rheological test of bending beams, and linear amplitude scanning test were, respectively, conducted for the microcapsule/asphalt to evaluate its road performance, including the high-temperature performance, low-temperature crack resistance, and fatigue performance. Finally, the self-healing performance of microcapsules/asphalt was tested. The results showed that the self-developed epoxy self-healing microcapsules were well encapsulated and presented as spherical micron-sized particles. The average particle size of the E-mic was approximately 23.582 μm, while the average particle size of the G-mic was approximately 22.440 μm, exhibiting a good normal distribution. In addition, they can remain intact and unbroken under high-temperature conditions. The results of road performance tests indicated that the microcapsule/asphalt mixture exhibits an excellent high-temperature resistance to permanent deformation, low-temperature crack resistance, and fatigue resistance. The self-healing test demonstrated that the microcapsule/asphalt exhibited an excellent self-healing performance. When the microcapsule content was 4%, the self-healing rate reached its optimal level of 67.8%, which was 149.2% higher than that of the base asphalt. Full article

The fatigue resistance of cement-stabilized macadam (CSM) plays a vital role in ensuring the long-term durability of pavement structures. However, limited cementitious material (CM) content often leads to high packing voids, which significantly compromise fatigue performance. Existing studies have rarely explored the coupled mechanism between pore structure and fatigue behavior, especially in the context of solid-waste-based CMs. In this study, a cost-effective alkali-activated sludge gasification slag (ASS) was proposed as a sustainable CM substitute for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) in CSM. A dual evaluation approach combining cross-sectional image analysis and fatigue loading tests was employed to reveal the effect pathway of void structure optimization on fatigue resistance. The results showed that ASS exhibited excellent cementitious reactivity, forming highly polymerized C-A-S-H/C-S-H gels that contributed to a denser microstructure and superior mechanical performance. At a 6% binder dosage, the void ratio of ASS–CSM was reduced to 30%, 3% lower than that of OPC–CSM. The 28-day unconfined compressive strength and compressive resilient modulus reached 5.7 MPa and 1183 MPa, representing improvements of 35.7% and 4.1% compared to those of OPC. Under cyclic loading, the ASS system achieved higher energy absorption and more uniform stress distribution, effectively suppressing fatigue crack initiation and propagation. Moreover, the production cost and carbon emissions of ASS were 249.52 CNY/t and 174.51 kg CO2e/t—reductions of 10.9% and 76.2% relative to those of OPC, respectively. These findings demonstrate that ASS not only improves fatigue performance through pore structure refinement but also offers significant economic and environmental advantages, providing a theoretical foundation for the large-scale application of solid-waste-based binders in pavement engineering. This article presents a review on the applications of basalt fibers and their composites in infrastructures. The characteristics and advantages of high-performance basalt fibers and their composites are firstly introduced. Then, the article discusses strengthening using basalt fiber sheets and BFRP bars or grids, followed by concrete structures reinforced with BFRP bars, asphalt pavements, and cementitious composites reinforced with chopped basalt fibers in terms of mechanical behaviors and application examples. The load-bearing capacity of the strengthened structures can be increased by up to 60%, compared with those without strengthening. The lifespan of the concrete structures reinforced with BFRP can be extended by up to 50 years at least in harsh environments, which is much longer than that of ordinary reinforced concrete structures. In addition, the fatigue cracking resistance of asphalt can be increased by up to 600% with basalt fiber. The newly developed technologies including anchor bolts using BFRPs, self-sensing BFRPs, and BFRP–concrete composite structures are introduced in detail. Furthermore, suggestions are proposed for the forward-looking technologies, such as long-span bridges with BFRP cables, BFRP truss structures, BFRP with thermoplastic resin matrix, and BFRP composite piles. Asphalt pavement cracking represents a prevalent form of deterioration that significantly compromises road performance and safety under the combined effects of environmental factors and traffic loading. Crack sealing has emerged as a widely adopted and cost-effective preventive maintenance strategy that restores the pavement’s structural integrity and extends service life. This paper presents a systematic review of the development of crack sealing technology, conducts a comparative analysis of conventional sealing materials (including emulsified asphalt, hot-applied asphalt, polymer-modified asphalt, and rubber-modified asphalt), and examines the existing performance evaluation methodologies. Critical failure mechanisms are thoroughly investigated, including interfacial bond failure resulting from construction defects, material aging and degradation, hydrodynamic scouring effects, and thermal cycling impacts. Additionally, this review examines advanced sensing methodologies for detecting premature sealant failure, encompassing both non-destructive testing techniques and active sensing technologies utilizing intelligent crack sealing materials with embedded monitoring capabilities. Based on current research gaps, this paper identifies future research directions to guide the development of intelligent and sustainable asphalt pavement crack repair technologies. The proposed research framework provides valuable insights for researchers and practitioners seeking to improve the long-term effectiveness of pavement maintenance strategies. Full article
