Background: The order Suliformes exhibits significant karyotype diversity, with Sula species showing a Z1Z1Z2Z2/Z1Z2W multiple-sex chromosome system, an uncommon occurrence in avians. Satellite DNAs (satDNAs), which consist of tandemly repeated sequences, often vary considerably even among closely related species, making them valuable markers for studying karyotypic evolution, particularly that of sex chromosome evolution. This study aims to characterize and investigate the potential role of these sequences in the karyotypic evolution of the group, with special attention to the sex chromosomes. Methods: Through characterizing satDNAs in two Suliformes species (Sula leucogaster and Nannopterum brasilianum) using BGISEQ-500 platform and bioinformatics analysis. Their chromosomal distribution was mapped by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) within their own karyotypes and in three additional Suliformes species (S. sula, S. dactylatra, and Fregata magnificens). Results: Five satDNAs were identified in S. leucogaster and eight in N. brasilianum. Within the genus Sula, three species shared specific satDNA sequences, although with different hybridization patterns. In contrast, the satDNAs of N. brasilianum were species-specific. Additionally, the Z chromosome, including Z2 in Sula species, showed reduced accumulation of repetitive DNAs. Conclusions: These results suggest that differential accumulation of repetitive sequences may have contributed to the diversification of karyotypes in this group, particularly influencing the structure and differentiation of sex chromosomes. Tandemly repeated DNA fragments are major components of centromeres and pericentromeric heterochromatin, which is responsible for chromosomal stability and segregation. Recent evidence suggests that transcripts from these repeats play a key role in heterochromatin maintenance, and these repeats can be highly dynamic with various copy numbers. Here, we developed a mathematical model for human satellite repeats, which tracks the silenced and desilenced repeats, lncRNA, and copy number. Our model shows that chromatin factors for silencing and RNA stability can facilitate copy gain in satellites. Also, the system can be bistable, and cells with different copy numbers, silenced repeats with a small copy number, and desilenced repeats with a large copy number may coexist. To incorporate the cooperative methylation by neighboring repeats and the local chromatin environment, we also developed a spatial model where the local chromatin environment facilitates methylation locally. This model suggests that a local domain of silenced repeats may be an important feature of copy number regulation. Our models suggest that pericentromeric repeats are highly dynamic, and small changes in chromatin regulation can lead to large changes in satellite copy numbers. Full article

Global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs), with their ubiquitous coverage, have become a cornerstone of modern position, navigation, and timing (PNT) services. While their spread spectrum communication offers inherent, albeit partial, resilience against interference, GNSSs remain a prime target for malicious actors seeking to disrupt or degrade precise location and time synchronization. Jamming mitigation has been an active research area for over three decades. Despite diverse research efforts, a key weakness in the literature is the absence of rigorous, methodologically sound testing of proposed mitigation techniques in a controlled laboratory environment. This work addresses this deficiency by exploring the challenges of evaluating GNSS receiver performance and response under interference and by proposing a more robust methodological framework for result interpretation. We present a custom simulation environment that enables repeated, controlled measurements of GNSS receiver behavior under various jamming attacks, revealing discrepancies between expected performance and real-world observations. Using three low-cost receivers as a case study, we demonstrate the inherent uncertainty in the results, the unpredictable behavior of the receivers’ embedded software, and appropriate statistical analysis practices. A key contribution of this work is a publicly available dataset of extensive GNSS receiver response measurements acquired under controlled interference conditions using an advanced signal generation and a comprehensive satellite constellation simulator. The classification of freshwater ecosystems is essential for effective biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management, particularly with increasing threats. We developed an automated approach to mapping and classifying freshwater ecosystem functional groups based on the IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology (GET), offering a scalable, dynamic and efficient alternative to current manual methods. Our method leveraged remote sensing data and thresholding algorithms to classify ecosystems into distinct ecosystem functional groups, accounting for challenges such as the temporal and spatial complexities of dynamic freshwater ecosystems and inconsistencies in manual classification. Unlike traditional approaches, which rely on manual cross-referencing to adapt existing maps and contain subjective biases, our system is repeatable, transparent and adaptable to new incoming satellite data. We demonstrate the applicability of this method in the Paroo–Warrego region of Australia (~14,000,000 ha), highlighting the automated classification’s capacity to process large areas with diverse ecosystems. Although some functional groups require static datasets due to current limitations in satellite data, the overall approach had high accuracy (84%). This work provides a foundation for future applications to other freshwater ecosystems around the world, underpinning biodiversity management, monitoring and reporting worldwide. Full article

Undifferenced Ambiguity Resolution for Precise Multi-GNSS Products to Support Global PPP-AR

Precise point positioning ambiguity resolution (PPP-AR) is a key technique for high-precision global navigation satellite system (GNSS) observations, with phase bias products playing a critical role in its implementation. The multi-GNSS experiment analysis center at Wuhan University (WUM) has adopted the undifferenced ambiguity resolution (UDAR) approach to generate high-precision orbit, clock, and observable-specific bias (OSB) products to support PPP-AR since day 162 of 2023. This study presents the analysis strategy employed and assesses the impact of the transition to ambiguity resolution on the orbit precision, using metrics such as orbit boundary discontinuities (OBD) and satellite laser ranging (SLR) validation. Additionally, the stability of the OSB products and the overall performance of PPP-AR solutions are evaluated. The OBD demonstrates specific improvements of 7.1% and 9.5% for GPS and Galileo, respectively, when UDAR is applied. Notably, BDS-3 medium Earth orbit satellites show a remarkable 15.2% improvement compared to the double-differenced results. However, for the remaining constellations, the improvements are either minimal or result in degradation. Using GPS and GLONASS solutions from the International GNSS Service (IGS) and other solutions from the European Space Agency (ESA) as references, the orbit differences of WUM solutions based on UDAR exhibit a significant reduction. However, the improvements in SLR validation are limited, as the radial orbit precision is primarily influenced by the dynamic model. The narrow-lane ambiguity fixing rate for static PPP-AR, based on data from approximately 430 globally distributed stations, reaches 99.2%, 99.2%, 88.8%, and 98.6% for GPS, Galileo, BDS-2, and BDS-3, respectively. The daily repeatability of station coordinates is approximately 1.4 mm, 1.9 mm, and 3.9 mm in the east, north, and up directions, respectively. Overall, these results demonstrate the effectiveness and potential of WUM’s undifferenced ambiguity resolution approach in enhancing GNSS data processing and facilitating PPP-AR applications. Logging operations comprise a repeated and tedious job in forestry operations because forestry forwarders must keep completing round-trip transportation on forest roads from tree-cutting sites to forest roads where their truck can be accessed. In this study, an autonomous driving system for tracked forwarders was developed using GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System)/INS (Inertial Navigation System). The mechanical control system of the forwarder was replaced with an electronic control system, and path-planning and -tracking algorithms were implemented. The electronic control system, operated by servo motors to operate the driving levers, exhibited a response that was 150 milliseconds faster in lever control compared to manual operation. To generate an autonomous driving path, a skilled operator drove the forwarder along a forest road, and the recorded path was post-processed using the Novatel Inertial Explorer 8.70 GNSS + INS software to minimize GNSS errors. The autonomous forwarder followed the generated path using the pure pursuit algorithm. Autonomous driving tests conducted along this path achieved a root mean square error (RMSE) within 0.4 m (range: 0.389–0.393). Driving errors were primarily attributed to GNSS positional inaccuracies, especially in environments with dense canopies and landslide prevention structures located higher than the GNSS antenna, obstructing satellite signals. These findings underscore the importance and feasibility of autonomous forwarders in diverse forest environments, providing a critical foundation for advancing autonomous forestry machinery. The proposed technologies are expected to significantly contribute to enhancing the productivity of forestry operations. Full article

Coral reefs are experiencing increasing disturbance regimes. The influence these disturbances have on coral reef health is traditionally captured through field-based monitoring, representing a very small reef area (<1%). Satellite-based observations offer the ability to up-scale the spatial extent of monitoring efforts to larger reef areas, providing valuable insights into benthic trajectories through time. Our aim was to demonstrate a repeatable benthic habitat mapping approach integrating field and satellite data acquired annually over 21 years. With this dataset, we analyzed the trends in benthic composition for a shallow platform reef: Heron Reef, Australia. Annual benthic habitat maps were created for the period of 2002 to 2023, using a random forest classifier and object-based contextual editing, with annual in situ benthic data derived from geolocated photoquadrats and coincident high-spatial-resolution (2–5 m pixel size) multi-spectral satellite imagery. Field data that were not used for calibration were used to conduct accuracy assessments. The results demonstrated the capability of remote sensing to map the time series of benthic habitats with overall accuracies between 59 and 81%. We identified various ecological trajectories for the benthic types, such as decline and recovery, over time and space. These trajectories were derived from satellite data and compared with those from the field data. Remote sensing offered valuable insights at both reef and within-reef scales (i.e., geomorphic zones), complementing percentage cover data with precise surface area metrics. We demonstrated that monitoring benthic trajectories at the reef scale every 2 to 3 years effectively captured ecological trends, which is crucial for balancing resource allocation. Full article

Spin Period Evolution of Decommissioned GLONASS Satellites

Light curve analysis of defunct satellites is critical for characterizing their rotational motion. An accurate understanding of this aspect will benefit active debris removal and on-orbit servicing missions as part of the solution to the space debris issue. In this study, we explored the attitude behavior of inactive GLONASS satellites, specifically a repeating pattern observed in their spin period evolution. We utilized a large amount of data available in the light curve database maintained by the Astronomical Institute of the University of Bern (AIUB). The morphology of the inactive GLONASS light curves typically features four peaks in two pairs and is presumably attributed to the presence of four evenly distributed thermal control flaps or radiators on the satellite bus. The analysis of the periods extracted from the light curves shows that nearly all of the inactive GLONASS satellites are rotating and exhibit a periodic oscillating pattern in their spin period evolution with an increasing or decreasing secular trend. Through modeling and simulation, we found that the periodic pattern is likely a result of canted solar panels that provide an asymmetry in the satellite model and enable a wind wheel or fan-like mechanism to operate. The secular trend is a consequence of differing values of the specular reflection coefficients of the front and back sides of the solar panels. Assuming an empirical model describing the spin period evolution of 18 selected objects, we found significant variations in the average spin period and amplitude of the oscillations, which range from 8.11 s to 469.58 s and 1.10 s to 513.24 s, respectively. However, the average oscillation period remains relatively constant at around 1 year. Notably, the average spin period correlates well with the average amplitude. The empirical model can be used to extrapolate the spin period in the future, assuming that the oscillating pattern is preserved and roughly shows a linear trend. Full article

Bipolar emerging flux regions (EFRs) form active regions (ARs) that generally evolve into a pre-existing magnetic environment in the solar atmosphere. Reconfiguration of the small- and large-scale magnetic connectivities is invoked to explain a plethora of energy-release phenomena observed at the sites of EFRs. These include brightening events, surges, and jets, whose triggers and relationships are still unclear. In this context, we study the formation of a proto-spot in AR NOAA 11462 by analyzing spectropolarimetric and spectroscopic measurements taken by the Interferometric Bidimensional Spectrometer along the Fe I 630.2 nm and Ca II 854.2 nm lines on 17 April 2012. We complement these high-resolution data with simultaneous SDO satellite observations. The proto-spot forms from magnetic flux and emerges into the photosphere, coalescing following plasma flows in its surroundings. The chromospheric and higher atmosphere observations show that flux emergence occurs in a pre-existing magnetic environment, with small- and large-scale coronal arcades that seemingly shape the proto-spot formation in the upper atmospheric layers. In addition, in the chromosphere, we observe an arch filament system and repeated intense brightening events and surges, likely due to magnetic interactions of the new flux with the pre-existing overlying coronal field. These phenomena have been observed since the early stages of the new flux emergence. Full article

The paper deals with the assembling, integration, and test (AIT) phase of the laboratory model of an innovative telescope in the framework of the project DORA (deployable optics for remote sensing applications). The telescope is a Cassegrain type of instrument, with an entrance pupil of ∅300 mm, f/16 aperture, and FOV of 0.16°. It has been designed to be mounted onboard a micro-satellite frame, allowing for switching between a stowed configuration during the launch phase and a deployed one once in orbit. The telescope is matched to an infrared Fourier spectrometer, operating in the spectral range of 5–25 μm, for the observation of terrestrial atmospheric phenomena, but it can also be adopted for planetary exploration missions. The telescope breadboard has been assembled in the INAF-IAPS premises and has undergone measurements for the determination of the accuracy and repeatability of the mechanism opening. The mechanical tests have demonstrated that the deployment mechanism adopted complies with the requirements imposed by the infrared Fourier spectrometer, guaranteeing a repositioning of the secondary mirror with respect to the primary mirror within 100 μm (in-plane displacement) and 0.01° (tilt) of the nominal position. The allopolyploid complexes in Crocus series Verni represent taxonomic challenges due to their variable or mostly overlapping morphology with one parental species. Moreover, their diploid ancestors remain unidentified, even with genome-wide SNP data. One such case, collected from the southeasternmost point of the series’ geographical distribution, is herein characterised and described as a new species, C. bachofenii. This study integrates phylogenomics and cytogenetics to infer the parental origin of C. bachofenii and establish its diagnostic morphological characteristics. Genome skimming of C. bachofenii and 10 other C. ser. Verni species enabled the development of novel satellite repeats as cytogenetic markers and the assembly of their complete chloroplast genomes that were employed for phylogenetic analysis alongside GBS data. The allopolyploid origin of C. bachofenii (2n = 16) was confirmed with C. vernus as the maternal parent. The probably extinct paternal parent was affiliated with a clade comprising C. heuffelianus, C. tommasinianus, C. kosaninii, and C. bertiscensis. Morphologically, C. bachofenii is distinguished by larger flowers, perigone segment coloration, and a stigma–anther ratio from its close relatives. In conclusion, its phylogenetic affiliation, distinctive cytological status, and unique morphological features justified the description of this taxon as a new species. Full article

The historical City of Venice, with its lagoon, has been severely exposed to repeated marine flooding since historical times due to the combined effects of sea level rise (SLR) and land subsidence (LS) by natural and anthropogenic causes. Although the sea level change in this area has been studied for several years, no detailed flooding scenarios have yet been realized to predict the effects of the expected SLR in the coming decades on the coasts and islands of the lagoon due to global warming. From the analysis of geodetic data and climatic projections for the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP1-2.6; SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5) released in the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), we estimated the rates of LS, the projected local relative sea level rise (RSLR), and the expected extent of flooded surfaces for 11 selected areas of the Venice Lagoon for the years 2050, 2100, and 2150 AD. Vertical Land Movements (VLM) were obtained from the integrated analysis of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) data in the time spans of 1996–2023 and 2017–2023, respectively. The spatial distribution of VLM at 1–3 mm/yr, with maximum values up to 7 mm/yr, is driving the observed variable trend in the RSLR across the lagoon, as also shown by the analysis of the tide gauge data. This is leading to different expected flooding scenarios in the emerging sectors of the investigated area. Scenarios were projected on accurate high-resolution Digital Surface Models (DSMs) derived from LiDAR data. By 2150, over 112 km2 is at risk of flooding for the SSP1-2.6 low-emission scenario, with critical values of 139 km2 for the SSP5-8.5 high-emission scenario. In the case of extreme events of high water levels caused by the joint effects of astronomical tides, seiches, and atmospheric forcing, the RSLR in 2150 may temporarily increase up to 3.47 m above the reference level of the Punta della Salute tide gauge station. This results in up to 65% of land flooding. This extreme scenario poses the question of the future durability and effectiveness of the MoSE (Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico), an artificial barrier that protects the lagoon from high tides, SLR, flooding, and storm surges up to 3 m, which could be submerged by the sea around 2100 AD as a consequence of global warming. Finally, the expected scenarios highlight the need for the local communities to improve the flood resiliency plans to mitigate the consequences of the expected RSLR by 2150 in the UNESCO site of Venice and the unique environmental area of its lagoon. Precision Farming (PF) in vineyards represents an innovative approach to vine cultivation that leverages the advantages of the latest technologies to optimize resource use and improve overall field management. This study investigates the application of PF techniques in a vineyard, focusing on sensor-based decision-making for autonomous driving. The goal of this research is to define a repeatable methodology for virtual testing of autonomous driving operations in a vineyard, considering realistic scenarios, efficient control architectures, and reliable sensors. The simulation scenario was created to replicate the conditions of a real vineyard, including elevation, banking profiles, and vine positioning. This provides a safe environment for training operators and testing tools such as sensors, algorithms, or controllers. This study also proposes an efficient control scheme, implemented as a state machine, to autonomously drive the tractor during two distinct phases of the navigation process: between rows and out of the field. The implementation demonstrates improvements in trajectory-following precision while reducing the intervention required by the farmer. The proposed system was extensively tested in a virtual environment, with a particular focus on evaluating the effects of micro and macro terrain irregularities on the results. A key feature of the control framework is its ability to achieve adequate accuracy while minimizing the number of sensors used, relying on a configuration of a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) as a cost-effective solution. This minimal-sensor approach, which includes a state machine designed to seamlessly transition between in-field and out-of-field operations, balances performance and cost efficiency. The system was validated through a wide range of simulations, highlighting its robustness and adaptability to various terrain conditions. The main contributions of this work include the high fidelity of the simulation scenario, the efficient integration of the control algorithm and sensors for the two navigation phases, and the detailed analysis of terrain conditions. Together, these elements form a robust framework for testing autonomous tractor operations in vineyards. Full article

The Quantum Internet (QI) necessitates a complete revision of the classical protocol stack and the technologies used, whereas its operating principles depend on the physical laws governing quantum mechanics. Recent experiments demonstrate that Optical Fibers (OFs) allow connections only in urban areas. Therefore, a novel Quantum Satellite Backbone (QSB) composed of a considerable number of Quantum Satellite Repeaters (QSRs) deployed in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) would allow for the overcoming of typical OFs’ attenuation problems. Nevertheless, the dynamic nature of the scenario represents a challenge for novel satellite networks, making their design and management complicated. Therefore, we have designed an ad hoc QSB considering the interaction between Digital Twin (DT) and Software-Defined Networking (SDN). In addition to defining the system architecture, we present a DT monitoring protocol that allows efficient status recovery for the creation of multiple End-to-End (E2E) entanglement states. Moreover, we have evaluated the system performance by assessing the path monitoring and configuration time, the time required to establish the E2E entanglement, and the fidelity between a couple of Ground Stations (GSs) interconnected through the QSB, also conducting a deep analysis of the created temporal paths. Mapping Coastal Marine Habitats Using UAV and Multispectral Satellite Imagery in the NEOM Region, Northern Red Sea

Effective management to conserve marine environments requires up-to-date information on the location, distribution, and extent of major benthic habitats. Remote sensing is a key tool for such assessments, enabling consistent, repeated measurements over large areas. There is particular interest in using freely available satellite images such as from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 series for accessible repeat assessments. In this study, an area of 438 km2 of the northern Red Sea coastline, adjacent to the NEOM development was mapped using Sentinel-2 imagery. A hierarchical Random Forest classification method was used, where the initial level classified pixels into a geomorphological class, followed by a second level of benthic cover classification. Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV) surveys were carried out in 12 locations in the NEOM area to collect field data on benthic cover for training and validation. The overall accuracy of the geomorphic and benthic classifications was 84.15% and 72.97%, respectively. Approximately 12% (26.26 km2) of the shallow Red Sea study area was classified as coral or dense algae and 16% (36.12 km2) was classified as rubble. These reef environments offer crucial ecosystem services and are believed to be internationally important as a global warming refugium. Seagrass meadows, covering an estimated 29.17 km2 of the study area, play a regionally significant role in carbon sequestration and are estimated to store 200 tonnes of carbon annually, emphasising the importance of their conservation for meeting the environmental goals of the NEOM megaproject. This is the first map of this region generated using Sentinel-2 data and demonstrates the feasibility of using an open source and reproducible methodology for monitoring coastal habitats in the region. The use of training data derived from UAV imagery provides a low-cost and time-efficient alternative to traditional methods of boat or snorkel surveys for covering large areas in remote sites.
