Background/objective: Class III malocclusion is a relatively common clinical problem among Asian patients, which is caused by skeletal discrepancies and involves complex factors. In growing patients, early intervention with myofunctional appliances can help correct jaw relationships more effectively. This case report presents the use of prefabricated myofunctional appliances (EF and MRC) to address Class III malocclusion through growth modification. Case description: A 9-year-old girl was diagnosed with skeletal Class III and a complete anterior crossbite. She underwent treatment with the prefabricated myofunctional appliances, worn during sleep and an additional two hours during the day for 51 months. The outcomes resulted from a combination of skeletal and dental changes, including a decrease in skeletal discrepancy (ANB: −5° to −2°), upper incisor proclination (U1 to SN: 112.5° to 123°), uprighting of the lower incisor (L1 to MP: 93.5° to 90°), and an increase in cranial flexure angle (123° to 125°) with a vertical mandibular growth pattern. The treatment improved facial profile, reduced skeletal discrepancy, corrected the anterior crossbite, and enhanced interdigitation. Conclusions: Prefabricated myofunctional appliances are effective options for managing skeletal Class III malocclusion in pediatric patients with vertical mandibular growth patterns, producing favorable skeletal and dentoalveolar changes. Hongiastoma zhangbuensis sp. nov. is described from a tributary of the upper reach of the Pearl River basin based on the morphological and molecular data. It is distinguished from all known species within the subfamily Acrossocheilinae by having a combination of the following characteristics: a crescent horny sheath on the lower jaw, a less prominent lower lip limited to the corners of the mouth, a serrated posterior edge of the last simple dorsal-ray, 47–50 lateral-line scales, 9 scales above the lateral line, 16–18 circumpeduncular scales, and 16–18 pre-dorsal midline scales. The molecular phylogeny revealed that H. zhangbuensis sp. nov. was a sister taxon to Hongiastomata argentatum, with a genetic distance ranging from 10.49% to 10.68%. Together, they formed a lineage at the base of the Acrossocheilinae clade. Furthermore, the interspecific genetic distances between the new species and those of Onychostoma sensu lato ranged from 9.9 to 13.4%, indicating significant genetic divergence between this new species and all known species within Onychostoma sensu lato. Therefore, both morphological and molecular data support the recognition of this species as new. Full article

Cranial kinesis in Neornithes is enabled by a complex system of bones, muscles, ligaments, and joints, allowing variable degrees of movement between the upper jaw and the neurocranium. Particularly, cranial prokinesis—mobility of the upper jaw relative to the neurocranium—is the most widespread form. It has been stated that Phorusrhacidae (Aves, Cariamiformes) were incapable of performing cranial kinesis. To assess potential functional differences within the clade, all known cranial flexion zones were analyzed and compared with the kinetic systems of extant Neornithes. In Psilopterinae and Mesembriornithinae, fusion of the ventral palatal flexion zones indicates a rigid, immobile palate. In larger taxa such as Patagornithinae and Phorusrhacinae, the pronounced thickening and fusion of the craniofacial flexion zone confirms the loss of prokinetic capabilities. The functional implications of such akinesis include simplification of food processing and a significant increase in bite force, which correlates with the predatory skills of the group. In a phylogenetic framework, phorusrhacids evolved from a kinetic ancestral condition, representing the only truly akinetic group among Neornithes. Full article

Aim: Pacifiers play a critical role in the early stages of craniofacial and palate development during infancy. While they provide comfort and aid in soothing, their use can also have significant impacts on the growth and function of the oral cavity. This study aimed to simulate and predict the behavior of six different types of pacifiers and their functional interaction with the tongue and palate, with the goal of understanding their potential effects on orofacial growth and development. Materials and Methods: Biomechanical analysis using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) mathematical models was employed to evaluate the behavior of six different commercial pacifiers in contact with the palate and tongue. Three-dimensional solid models of the palate and tongue were based on the mathematical framework from a 2007 publication. This allowed for a detailed investigation into how various pacifier designs interact with soft and hard oral tissues, particularly the implications on dental and skeletal development. Results: The findings of this study demonstrate that pacifiers exhibit different interactions with the oral cavity depending on their geometry. Anatomical–functional pacifiers, for instance, tend to exert lateral compressions near the palatine vault, which can influence the hard palate and contribute to changes in craniofacial growth. In contrast, other pacifiers apply compressive forces primarily in the anterior region of the palate, particularly in the premaxilla area. Furthermore, the deformation of the tongue varied significantly across different pacifier types: while some pacifiers caused the tongue to flatten, others allowed it to adapt more favorably by assuming a concave shape. These variations highlight the importance of selecting a pacifier that aligns with the natural development of both soft and hard oral tissues. Conclusions: The results of this study underscore the crucial role of pacifier geometry in shaping both the palate and the tongue. These findings suggest that pacifiers have a significant influence not only on facial bone growth but also on the stimulation of oral functions such as suction and feeding. The geometry of the pacifier affects the soft tissues (tongue and muscles) and hard tissues (palate and jaw) differently, which emphasizes the need for careful selection of pacifiers during infancy. Choosing the right pacifier is essential to avoid potential negative effects on craniofacial development and to ensure that the benefits of proper oral function are maintained. Therefore, healthcare professionals and parents should consider these biomechanical factors when introducing pacifiers to newborns. Full article

Background/Objectives: This prospective intervention study examined the learning effect of using 3D-printed phantom heads with cleft lip and palate (CLP) and upper jaw models with CLP and maxillary plates during a lecture for dental students in their fourth year at J. W. Goethe Frankfurt University. The primary aim was to evaluate the impact of 3D-printed models on students’ satisfaction levels along with their understanding and knowledge in dental education. Methods: Six life-sized phantom heads with removable mandibles (three with unilateral and three with bilateral CLP) were designed using ZBrush software (Pixologic Inc., Los Angeles, CA, USA) based on MRI images and printed with an Asiga Pro 4K 3D printer (Asiga, Sydney, Australia). Two groups of students (n = 81) participated in this study: the control (CTR) group (n = 39) attended a standard lecture on cleft lip and palate, while the intervention (INT) group (n = 42) participated in a hands-on seminar with the same theoretical content, supplemented by 3D-printed models. Before and after the session, students completed self-assessment questionnaires and a multiple-choice test to evaluate knowledge improvement. Data analysis was conducted using the chi-square test for individual questions and the Wilcoxon rank test for knowledge gain, with the significance level set at 0.05. Results: The study demonstrated a significant knowledge increase in both groups following the lecture (p < 0.001). Similarly, there were significant differences in students’ self-assessments before and after the session (p < 0.001). The knowledge gain in the INT group regarding the anatomical features of unilateral cleft lip and palate was significantly higher compared to that in the CTR group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrate the measurable added value of using 3D-printed models in dental education, particularly in enhancing students’ understanding of the anatomy of cleft lip and palate. This study investigated the effects of feeding striped beakfish (Oplegnathus fasciatus) newly hatched larvae on the survival and growth of kawakawa (Euthynnus affinis) larvae and juveniles, as well as their relative growth patterns. Fertilized eggs of kawakawa were reared in 1 m3 experimental tanks until 13 days post-hatch (dph). From 3 to 8 dph, larvae were fed enriched rotifers, and from 9 to 12 dph, they were assigned to two experimental groups: one receiving only a formulated diet and the other receiving a combination of the formulated diet and 10,000 striped beakfish newly hatched larvae every day in each tank. The group fed newly hatched larvae exhibited approximately 36% greater growth than the group fed only the formulated diet. However, survival at 13 dph was approximately 34% lower, suggesting that further investigation is needed to determine the optimal feeding quantity of newly hatched larvae. The relative growth patterns of larvae and juveniles reared in a commercial 30 m3 tank showed morphological traits characteristic of scombrid fish, such as a longer preanal length and upper jaw length. Growth patterns varied at three key body lengths (notochord length or standard length; 3, 8–10, and 30 mm), as well as at their corresponding standard lengths. In kawakawa, the upper jaw exhibited early accelerated growth compared to other scombrid species. This characteristic is believed to facilitate the early onset of piscivory under captive conditions. Background: In modern dentistry, alveolar socket preservation after tooth extraction plays a critical role in maintaining the alveolar ridge for future dental implants. This retrospective clinical study evaluated bone-level changes 15 years after immediate implant placement, coupled with alveolar ridge preservation. Methods: Fifty non-smoking patients aged 25 to 75 (30 males and 20 females) who underwent single-implant rehabilitation in both anterior and posterior regions of the upper and lower jaws were included. The study examined bone levels and implant survival over time, using standardized intraoral radiographs at 1, 5, and 15 years post-loading. Implants were placed immediately after atraumatic extraction, and the residual gap was grafted with bovine hydroxyapatite and covered with a collagen membrane. The primary outcome was bone-level stability, while secondary outcomes included implant failure. No temporary crowns or removable dentures were provided during healing. Radiographs were digitized for detailed analysis. Results: The results for 50 patients with immediate implant placement showed that bone-resorption levels were significantly higher in the upper jaw than in the lower jaw. Conclusions: Posterior implants exhibited greater bone loss than anterior implants, particularly at 1 year and 15 years, while no implant failures occurred. Full article

Background and Objectives: This in vitro trial aimed to investigate if there is a correlation between the homogeneities of different composite materials and their adhesion to glass fiber posts (GFPs). Materials and Methods: Twenty intact human upper jaw central incisors extracted due to periodontal diseases were selected for this trial. Endodontic treatment was performed according to ISO recommendations. A total of 4 mm of guttapercha was left in the apical region. Canals were prepared for post insertion. Teeth were randomly allocated into the two following groups depending on the core restorative material (n = 10): I—cores build up with light cured composite; II—cores build up with dual cured composite resin. GFPs were inserted and cores were rebuilt with different composite resins. Longitudinal cuts were made across the axis of the teeth and examined under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Statistical analysis was accomplished using Mann–Whitney U and Spearman tests (p < 0.05). Results: In the group where the number and size of pores at the interface of GFPs were analyzed, pores were found only in the specimens restored with the light-cured “bulk-filled” composite. In the group where the number and size of pores in the core material were analyzed, pores were found in specimens restored with both the light-cured “bulk-filled” composite and dual-cured resin composite. However, the dual-cured resin composite yielded better results in terms of core integration. Conclusions: There is no statistically significant correlation between the homogeneities of different composite materials and their adhesion to GFP. Full article

Background/Objectives: Anterior tooth inclination plays a critical role in treatment planning for surgical orthodontic cases. However, post-treatment outcomes in patients with jaw deformities often deviate from cephalometric values. This study aimed to compare anterior tooth inclination and skeletal morphology among patients with Class II and Class III malocclusions and to establish reference values for individualized treatment plans. Methods: A total of 122 patients (Class II: n = 40; Class III: n = 41; Class I: n = 41 as a control) were retrospectively analyzed. Cephalometric parameters, including U1 to FH and L1 to MP, were measured pre- and post-treatment. Group differences were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s multiple comparison test. Multiple regression analysis was used to establish prediction models for anterior tooth inclination. The threshold for statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: Post-treatment, upper anterior teeth were more lingually inclined in Class II patients and more labially inclined in Class III patients compared to Class I controls (U1 to FH: Class II, 106.8°; Class III, 120.4°; Class I, 111.1°; p < 0.01). Lower anterior teeth were more lingually inclined in Class III patients compared to Class I patients (L1 to MP: 84.9°; p < 0.01). Regression models demonstrated good predictive value (R2 > 0.5) in non-extraction cases. Conclusions: Regression equations developed in this study, alongside the cephalometric averages of Class I individuals, may offer reliable reference values tailored to individual craniofacial morphology, contributing to optimized treatment planning in surgical orthodontic cases. Aim: This study aimed to assess the impact of rapid palatal expansion (RPE) treatment on vertical craniodentofacial characteristics and upper airway dimensions in individuals with crossbites and skeletal discrepancies. Subjects and Methods: The study involved 38 participants, including 15 boys and 23 girls who received treatment with RPE. Lateral cephalograms were taken before and after the treatment and were analyzed both before and after the treatment using the AudaxCeph version 6.6.12.4731 and Facad software version 3.15.0.1167. For airway dimensions, McNamara analysis was used, and for craniofacial characteristics, cephalometric analysis was used. The study measured 14 parameters in the standard cephalometric analysis and 6 parameters in the airway analysis. Results: The findings indicated a significant decrease in the mandibular angle (MeGoAr, p < 0.001). The angle between the cranial base and the nasal line (SNNL, p = 0.96), intermaxillary angle (p = 0.58), Björk’s polygon (p = 0.67) and the angle between the cranial base and the mandibular angle (SNGoGn, p = 0.96) did not change significantly. A significant increase in the upper pharynx was found after treatment in both the RPE group (p = 0.033) and the RPE + Face Mask (FM) group (p = 0.016) The increase in the upper airway in the RPE group was borderline significant (p = 0.048). Conclusion: No significant differences were found between the experimental groups for changes in airway dimensions after treatment. RPE treatment did not led to an increase in vertical craniodentofacial characteristics. Both RPE and RPE + FM treatments induced an increase in upper pharynx dimensions. Full article

Background: During the initiation of routine orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances, placing elastic separators (ESs) may lead to the patient experiencing considerable pain. Earlier studies evaluating the effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on reducing pain caused by orthodontic ESs have reported contradictory results. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of a single application of LLLT on the experience of pain following ES placement. Methods: A double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized controlled trial was performed—with implementation of the split-mouth technique—where n = 33 volunteers (12 male and 21 female; aged between 19 and 36 years) were enrolled. ESs were placed at the mesial and distal surfaces of the first permanent molars in the upper or lower jaws. Jaws were divided into two quadrants; the treatment group received LLLT (using a GaAlAs diode laser, at a 980 nm wavelength, with 100 mW producing 6 J of energy; continuous wave), while the other quadrant served as the placebo side receiving a similar treatment, but without laser irradiation, immediately after separation. A questionnaire with a visual analogue scale (VAS; 0–100) was used for the assessment of pain (spontaneous pain and pain on mastication) scored for each first permanent molar directly after separation and after 6, 24, 48 and 72 h of both laser and placebo treatment application. Results: Mean VAS values were lower, but not significantly different, between the treatment vs. placebo groups for spontaneous pain at either measurement point (p > 0.05). Mean VAS values were significantly lower in the treatment groups for pain on mastication at the 6 (9.29 ± 12.65 vs. 19.07 ± 20.99; p = 0.025), 24 (21.96 ± 21.11 vs. 37.19 ± 26.35; p = 0.012) and 48 h (28.01 ± 21.40 vs. 42.60 ± 26.29; p = 0.016) measurement points. The analgetic effect of LLLT was most effective after 6 h, both in the resting position (−49% decrease) and during mastication (−51% decrease). Conclusions: A single application of LLLT with 6 J of energy may have beneficial effects on reducing the pain caused by orthodontic ESs used at the initiation of treatment with fixed appliances, especially during mastication, after 6–48 h following the separation procedure. The threadsail filefish, Stephanolepis cirrhifer, is an economically important marine species. However, wild catches have sharply decreased over the past 20 years, causing S. cirrhifer to be added to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Accordingly, this study seeks to promote technological development for artificial breeding and early life-stage farming by defining the morphological characteristics of ontogenesis. The fertilized eggs, with a diameter of 0.62 ± 0.01 mm, were spherical and sticky and contained multiple oil globules of varying sizes. The embryonic development was observed and divided into eight phases, which were cleavage, blastocyst, gastrula, neurula, organogenesis, muscular contraction, heart pulsation, and hatching. At 3 days post-hatching (dph), the yolk sac was completely absorbed. The eye developed rapidly, and the mouth fissure and anus initially formed. Some larvae were fed on S-rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis). At 6–8 dph, the upper and lower jaws of larvae were gradually covered by leathery skin, and the head-to-body proportion increased. At 14–16 dph, the fin differentiation occurred in the dorsal, anal, and pectoral fins, with widespread distribution of yellow and melanin on the body surface. Swim bladder was clear. The swimming ability of larva was enhanced, resulting in an obvious clustering phenomenon. At 22–25 dph, the end of the notochord continued to tilt upwards, forming a tail fin. The trunk was evenly distributed with protruding circular punctate scales. The snout was covered with leathery epidermis, and the mouth began to round. At 40–45 dph, the juvenile completed metamorphosis, with horizontal dark stripes appearing on the trunk. Pigmented spots appeared on the tail fins. The counts of dorsal and anal fin spines were 34–36 and 32–34 dph, respectively. During the development of larvae and juveniles, the growth parameters, such as total length, standard length, body height, and body weight, were made as growth curves. The slopes of growth curves were calculated. We found two inflexion points occurring in the growth curves, which may be associated with metamorphosis and transitions in feeding habits. These results enrich the biological understanding of filefish species while providing guidance for artificial propagation and fry production in S. cirrhifer. Full article

Sex identification is often challenging, especially when only skeletal remains are available. While previous research has primarily focused on skull measurements, dental traits have received less attention. This study aimed to measure the upper and lower canines, molars, and tooth rows of raccoon dogs in Lithuania to examine sexual dimorphism and analyze the correlation between different teeth and tooth row measurements. A total of 90 skulls with lower jaws of adult raccoon dogs were examined, including 55 males and 35 females. Osteometric analysis followed standard protocols, with canine measurements adapted using a method tailored to the dentition of carnivorous species. Of all the study measurements, the canine teeth demonstrated the most significant sex differences. The correlation analysis showed a strong correlation (p < 0.001) between the dimensions of the upper molars P4, M1, and M2. The upper tooth rows were strongly correlated (p < 0.001) with the dimensions of the P4 and canines. Lower molar correlations were weaker than upper ones, and lower tooth rows showed less correlation with tooth measurements. These findings indicate that molars and tooth rows are not reliable for sex determination in raccoon dogs. However, the observed sexual dimorphism in canine teeth may offer insights for future zooarchaeological and comparative anatomical studies. Full article

The occurrence of triplication in the deciduous teeth is rare. However, it can cause several problems in primary dentition, alteration of development, and eruption of permanent successors. Case Presentation: A three-year-old boy presented with an exuberant acute periapical abscess in the left front teeth region of the upper jaw. Examination revealed a presence of a triple tooth involving the central and lateral left primary incisors and a supernumerary tooth. Radiographs showed that the fused teeth had separate roots, pulp chambers and root canals. The implemented treatment was extraction under local anesthesia. After 2 years of observation, surgical exposure of the crowns of the permanent maxillary central incisor was performed. After seven years, the permanent dentition was completed without any sequelae. Discussion: Triple tooth, as observed in this case report, results from the union of three tooth germs, potentially influenced by physical, hereditary, or environmental factors, leading to esthetic and functional issues and increased susceptibility to caries. Treatment is challenging, requiring preventive care, complex endodontic procedures, and, in some cases, extraction with space maintenance to avoid future orthodontic complications. Conclusion: Early diagnosis, an adequate treatment plan and clinical monitoring should be performed, aiming at preventing the possible disturbances. Full article

Phenotypic Craniofacial and Upper Spine Characteristics in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

Background/Objectives: This study investigates differences in craniofacial morphology including skull thickness, sella turcica morphology, nasal bone length, and posterior cranial fossa dimensions, as well as differences in head posture and deviations in upper spine morphology, in adult OSA patients compared to healthy controls with neutral occlusion. Methods: 51 OSA patients (34 men, 17 women, mean age 51.9 ± 11.3 years) and 74 healthy controls (19 men, 55 women, mean age 38.7 years ± 14.0 years) with neutral occlusion were included. Craniofacial morphology and head posture were investigated using cephalometric measurements on lateral cephalograms and morphological deviations in sella turcica and upper spine were assessed through visual description of lateral cephalograms. Results: OSA patients had significantly more retrognathic maxilla (p = 0.02) and mandible (p = 0.032 and p = 0.009), significantly larger beta-angle (p = 0.006), and significantly smaller jaw angle (p = 0.045) compared to controls. OSA patients had significantly larger length (p = 0.003, p = 0.001, p = 0.044) and depth of the posterior cranial fossa (p < 0.001) compared to controls. OSA patients had a significantly more extended (p < 0.001) and forward-inclined head posture (p < 0.001) and morphological deviations in the upper spine occurred significantly more often in OSA patients compared to controls (p = 0.05). No significant differences in skull thickness, nasal bone length, and morphological deviations in the sella turcica (p = 0.235) were found between the groups. Conclusions: Significant deviations were found in craniofacial morphology, head posture, and morphological deviations in the upper spine. The results may prove valuable in the diagnostics of OSA patients and in considerations regarding etiology and the phenotypic differentiation of OSA patients. Full article
