Dear Colleagues,
There is a significant gap in knowledge in the molecular understanding of interorgan communications at the onset, prevention, and treatment of cardiometabolic diseases. This is in spite of a conceptual agreement in the field of immunometabolism, in particular among researchers focusing on the gut–liver axis, that improved gut health is key to alleviating cardiometabolic diseases. While there is strong evidence supporting the hypothesis of immunological imprinting to alleviate cardiometabolic diseases, the molecular and cell-specific dependency of inter-organ crosstalk remains inadequately described. Additionally, emerging evidence also challenges the binary concept of good versus bad microbes to direct immunometabolic homeostasis, thus lending credence to the hypothesis of host–microbe interactions being both diet- and context-dependent. In this Special Issue, we aim to bridge the described gap in knowledge by welcoming submissions of high-quality manuscripts describing (a) novel preclinical models phenocopying human pathophysiology within cardiometabolic diseases, (b) human association data on metabolite signaling in cardiometabolic diseases, (c) preclinical and/or clinic reports on organismal changes to nutritional and immunological challenges with a prime, but not sole, focus on either the gut–liver, gut–heart, or liver–heart axes, as well as (d) host–microbe interactions and their malleability through dietary interventions. We also welcome hypothesis-driven manuscripts on bacterial translocation in cardiometabolic diseases. We aim to facilitate a transparent, swift, and fair review process and thus encourage pre-inquiries including proposals for reviews falling within the scope of this Special Issue.

- The role of the gut microbiome in CVD and cardiovascular complications of metabolic diseases;
- Dietary interventions to modulate the microbiome-immune/metabolic axis at the onset or treatment of CVD;
- Therapeutic strategies to intervene with bacterial translocation in cardiometabolic diseases.
