This paper describes first results of an image recognition-based location (IRBL) approach used for indoor positioning with mobile devices. Firstly, in order to obtain a prior spatial knowledge of the surroundings, a complete 3D survey of the environment using a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) instrument is realized. Starting from the point clouds, a database (DB) of reference images was generated using a specific software, developed by the Geomatics group of the Politecnico di Torino, able to produce RGB-D images according to each scan position. Once the DB is realized, in order to calculate the correct position of each image (query image), it first extracts the most similar image from the database using a visual search approach, then the IRBL procedure is performed. According to the proposed approach the external parameters (X, Y, Z, ω, ϕ, and κ) and the range information extracted from the alike-image are used to estimate the correct position and attributes of the query image.
