Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue aims to collect high-quality review papers from all fields of microbial metabolism, physiology, and genetics. We encourage researchers from related fields to contribute review papers which highlight the latest developments in microbial metabolism, physiology, and genetics (including transcriptomics, proteomics, and genomics, as well as integrated approaches), or rather to invite relevant experts and colleagues to do so. Full-length comprehensive reviews will be preferred.

Let us advance and share the science as widely as possible.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Hypocrellins (HYPs), naturally occurring 3,10-xylene-4,9-anthracene derivatives sourced from Shiraia bambusicola and Hypocrella bambusae, exhibit significant photobiological activities. Despite their capability for generating a high yield of reactive oxygen species, including singlet oxygen and superoxide anion radical, their application in photodynamic therapy (PDT) is constrained. This limitation is due to their low dark phototoxicity, weak absorption within the therapeutic window of PDT (600–900 nm), and inherent hydrophobicity, which hinder their immediate use in amphipathic PDT applications. This review comprehensively discusses the research advancements in the bioactivities and biosynthesis of HYPs, alongside the reported chemical and physical modifications that enhance their water solubility and extend their therapeutic window. Additionally, it explores potential strategies for developing pharmaceuticals, photocatalytic agents, and photosensitive pesticides based on HYPs. Full article

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are bioactive macromolecules that exhibit antibacterial, antiviral, and immunomodulatory functions. They come from a wide range of sources and are found in all forms of life, from bacteria to plants, vertebrates, and invertebrates, and play an important role in controlling the spread of pathogens, promoting wound healing and treating tumors. Consequently, AMPs have emerged as promising alternatives to next-generation antibiotics. With advancements in systems biology and synthetic biology technologies, it has become possible to synthesize AMPs artificially. We can better understand their functional activities for further modification and development by investigating the mechanism of action underlying their antimicrobial properties. This review focuses on the structural aspects of AMPs while highlighting their significance for biological activity. Furthermore, it elucidates the membrane targeting mechanism and intracellular targets of these peptides while summarizing molecular modification approaches aimed at enhancing their antibacterial efficacy. Finally, this article outlines future challenges in the functional development of AMPs along with proposed strategies to overcome them. Full article

p-Cymene (p-C) [1-methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-benzene] is a monoterpene found in a variety of plants and has several biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties. This paper explores the microbial fermentation pathways involved in the biosynthesis of p-C, with an emphasis on its potential as a therapeutic agent. Through microbial and biochemical processes, p-C can be produced using renewable precursors such as limonene and 1,8-cineole. Recent advances in fermentation technology have enhanced the efficiency of p-C production, highlighting its role in various industries. Additionally, this paper reviews the antimicrobial bioactivity of p-C, focusing on its ability to inhibit pathogens and modulate immune responses. The integration of microbial biosynthesis and fermentation methods offers a sustainable approach to producing p-C for applications in the perfume, cosmetics, food, and pharmaceutical sectors. Understanding these biosynthetic pathways is crucial for advancing the use of p-C as a bio-based chemical with therapeutic potential. In particular, p-C inhibits the expression of cytokine signal 3 in intestinal inflammation and modulates antioxidant and immunomodulatory systems to protect barrier cells and maintain the mucus layer.
